The top 22" CRTs are gone forever. Can't find new ones *anywhere*.

I waited too long. :(

If anyone happens to come across a vendor that is selling any of the monitors below,
factory new and sealed, please drop me a private email.

IBM C220p
NEC FE2111
HP p1230/1220
Compaq p1230/1220

(A google search might reveal some vendors selling these, but when you actually click
through, you end up with a dead link or "not in stock" message)

Samsung 1100 owners, are your screens really flat, or is it a curved screen with a flat plate of glass on the front?

Iiyama, Philips, Viewsonic, Samsung...I think these are the only choices left.

i think you have come to a point in time where lcd's are taking over and surpassing crt's in convenience and some quality. how about a nice sony or dell lcd monitor for you? a 2005fpw would be good.

How an LCD passes a CRT in "convenience" is beyond me- does that mean you can run them at any resolution you want now with no distortion?

Get a refurbed Mitsubishi Diamondtron or Sony Trinitron. It should provide you quality service and impeccable image quality for a good price.

btw, CRT are still superior tech. I bought a 17" LCD and I still decided after a couple weeks to switch my PC to my old 17" CRT. just such a difference in IQ at different resolutions and NO ghosting.

The triumph of style over substance. I'm glad I got my hands on a perfectly functioning NEC FE2111 a few months ago.

i get headaches from that flicker and also the text is not sharp for long reading. but i agree that the image quality is superior. they just give off way too much heat too. i couldn't fit one on my desk anyway.

I never thought I would buy a monitor off ebay, but I did that today. A 22" Compaq
p1220 (Diamondtron). The seller was only 10 minutes from my house, so I went to
take a look. Impressive set up. Not just some people selling used monitors, but a
refurbishing business. Large, clean setup. Lab tables. Testing equipment. Engineers
with open monitors tweaking, calibrating, repairing, etc. Not a bad risk for $100.

But I'm still looking for NEW monitor--from that list I made previously.

Yoyo, that was an HP link, right? I called them the other day. No luck. But thanks.

Oh, and CRTs are the only option when you need professional color accuracy. LCDs
are not quite there yet...otherwise I would consider getting one.

I think that he was talking about the convienience of not having to buy a HUGE desk to use a large monitor.

I picked up a refurbed 21" Trinitron-based IBM P260 at Microcenter yesterday and I'm completely satisfied for $170. I think the sale ends tomorrow though.

I have a HP p1130 21" CRT (Sony Trinitron screen) and it is awesome. I have the flexibility to run at any resolution i want depending on what i am doing.

I just bought myself a NEC FE2111SB for $380 at overstock.com. Sure, it's a refurb, but I got a 2 yr service warranty and I can't tell if the monitor was ever used at all. This thing is beautiful, accurate colors, darks that are actually darks, no ghosting, and of course the large screen.

i move my monitor to and from my desk at home to another computer so i can't use a crt. also the air conditioning bill went down alot since we started using 3 lcds instead of 3 crts. i just like the sharpness, since that is imprtant for reading onscreen. also, colors are more bold and vivid with no flicker.

bummer.

I went through all the nec listed retailers and that one looked most promising. It said it would ship out next day or something to that effect :(

EDIT:

On a slightly related issue... I have a FE950+ and I was really considering getting a refurb 1250+ but decided against it.
I've had this 950+ for over 3 years and I love it. If it dies, I'm going to get another nice NEC CRT if I can... unless LCDs are advanced enough by then to compete with what I'm used to.

If you are set on a new one, I would recommend this: http://www.techonweb.com/products/productdetail.aspx?id=A65680

It's the same thing as the awesome Diamond Pro 2070 in a nicer looking case and is about $120 cheaper than what it usually goes for, although still somewhat pricey. I got my 2070 from this reseller about two months ago. However, I would really advise against getting a brand new one and suggest looking at ebay instead for a used one (not a refurb, which is more likely a defective one that someone else returned). The quality control on most CRTs is so bad (or was, since they have been mostly discontinued now) that you have a pretty high chance of getting a defective and/or poorly calibrated one if you buy new at this point.

The Sony 24" is actually not that expensive on ebay. There are a number of used HP branded ones going there for $400-$500. I would still take the 2070 or one of its equivalents though due to the superbright mode and better refresh rates.
