CRT vs. LCD?

How do the two compare now? I remember early on and even recently people were saying color quality is way better on CRTs, but is it still? How are prices for 19-22 inches for a decent monitor?

Just curious...i want to build a new rig in the next few months and want an LCD not a CRT.

thanks

Extremely vague guide (in terms of color reproduction, best to worst):

Professional-grade CRT designed for color work
Professional-grade LCD designed for color work
Good 'consumer' CRT
Average 'consumer' CRT or good 'consumer' LCD
Below-average 'consumer' CRT or average 'consumer' LCD
Below-average 'consumer' LCD

The problem is that nobody is making 'average' and 'good' CRTs anymore. Unless you get a used/refurbished one, all you can get is crap and super-high-end professional models. Also, even crappy LCDs have better geometry and sharpness than almost any CRT (as long as you run them at native resolution).

This question gets asked more times than "Evaluate my rig."

I should keep a canned response in Notepad for pasting. 🙂

Maybe you can email Anand and fix the search button for him. I've been dying to use it myself on many occasions.

LCD all the way man, easy on the eyes, takes less space, is not bulky, consume less electricity, well for the colour thing i'll let others comment

eye strain + much less power consumption = lcd. at this point theres no reason to buy crt for most users. even you have the cash for a professional crt you'd be better off with a larger wide screen lcd. if you needed such a crt for color requirements you would know it, and you'd also have to pay for more costly full spectrum fluorescent lights and such things to go with it.

should people just settle for a 17' or should ppl get +19' now

17 to 19 feet is just a little too big 😉 But I would think a nice 19" (inch) at less than $200 is a good bang for the buck right now.

I took me a LONG time before I gave up my 21" Dell P1130 CRT, but now I'm glad I made the leap. Since I game, speed was an issue for me. Now that 8ms and faster speeeds are common with the newer LCDs, this has not been an issue.

whats native res

Very simply it is the use of the exact number of pixels, horizontal and vertical, that are built into the display so there is no interpolation to other resolutions.
