OK ,I have specific models in mind (Samsung SyncMaster 240T and Sony GDM-FW900). But I'm not interested in which is the better monitor, rather which is better for what task.

3D gaming?
2D graphics work?
3D modeling/CAD?
watching DVDs?
general desktop work?

I dunno what is LCD and what CRT, so...

3D gaming: CRT
2D grx work: min 19"er HQ CRT or a HQ LCD
3D modeling/CAD: same as above but a 21"CRT rules (not these cheapo ones...)
DVD: a normal CRT is enough
gen. desktop: same as above

--------------------
get a CRT

Personally I find that LCD is superior in absolutely everything ACCEPT gaming. My fiancee has a high end Sony LCD on her system and it looks awful in games.

Most lCD's suffer from ghosting which limits their abilities in games and DVD?s, if their pixel response is fast enough then they can play games and do DVD?s well, for quality of the monitor in each of your tasks the CRT will be better, but their is certainly some cache to having a 24 lcd (that costs about $6000 so I personally think that is overboard.) However, even after stating this I will probably be buying an 18 inch LCD myself to take to college (don?t have the space for a good CRT, nor do I want to carry one back and forth.) I would not get the Samsung now as sgi is supposedly about to release a competitor for it and since the old sgi 1600sw (17.3 inch wide screen, 3 years old) is still rated tops for lcds I would definitely look into the new one if you can afford it.

Sony GDM-FW900 is simply fantastic!
After I've seen one on PCEXPO I could not stop myself from ordering it from DELL (using that 20% off deal) :D

Well, GDM-FW900 was designed to do graphical and 3d modeling/cad work.
DVDs looks absolutely inceredible on it.
You can't say the same about LCD wich is good only for general desktop work

I bought the samsung 170t and use it with a dvi input. Its still NOT better than my cheapo kds avitron 19" crt flat screen, but I can look at it for long periods without the eye strain a crt gives you. I am able to play dvd's and unreal tournament on the samsung perfectly. I was surprised how good it is and its so much more lighter and moveable if need be.
