CRT Monitor Trouble

I have an Envision EN-710e 17" CRT monitor. Worked fine until recently. Symptoms - outer 4" of display on both vertical sides shimmer badly - real hard to read icons/time/date unless I jiggle my head in time with the shimmer...works for awhile but then I get a headache - LOL. Central 6"x6" area is stable and clear - guess I could have a REAL SMALL browser window and use the slider bars ALOT - LOL.

Other monitors work fine - problem is definitely the monitor.
Degauss - no effect.

Anybody know what component might have failed?

Anybody ever try to fix one?

Even if it was a fairly simple part, would that part cost more than a new monitor?

I know a monitor repair bill would exceed buying a new one. Also, I know of stored energy inside that can shock the @#$%^ out of you. This monitor probably is trashable, but I sure like to fix things if I can.

Thanks for any info. Doug

I had similar problems with my monitor. The problem in my case was magnetic interference. My surge protector was under my monitor and it made it have all kinds of problems. Moved the surge protector= problem go away. Some speakers can do this too.

Thanks, Silversierra...probably 3-4 years old...out of warranty. I did try moving the speakers away - no joy.

If you are certain the monitor is defective, I do not think it will likely be worth fixing if it is a relatively cheap 17" CRT from 3-4 years ago. You could take it to an electronics/TV repair shop and see what they think -- but it might cost $25-50 just to get a diagnosis.
