Hi all, I'm hoping you could help me repair a broken CRT monitor I'm going to get. I found the monitor on Craigslist and the guy says it "has developed a gray cast on the screen with some horizontal lines." Here is the original Craig's posting:

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/sys/633683505.html

Anyways, I'm going to pick it up either tomorrow or the day after. I know a bit about electronics and might be able to fix it, but I have a few questions beforehand.

I was told this earlier by a BB Geek Squad person that opening a CRT monitor is potentially dangerous, due to the risk of electrical shock caused by energy still residing in the capacitors. Is this at all true, and is it indeed dangerous to open? If so, is there any way to discharge the remaining energy to make it safe?

What sort of precautions should I take before beginning the repair?

In his Craig's post he linked to a site that might have a potential fix for the problem, does it make sense and is it likely the problem?

Lastly, is this a good monitor? It looks good to me, and 21" is pretty big considering I only have a 17" now.

Thanks for your help!

Dont even think about tinkering around inside a CRT unless you have any idea what you are doing, you can kill yourself

Hopefully those "horizontal lines on the screen" aren't the two internal wires (dividing the screen into thirds) that Sony Trinitrons use to stabilize the vertical mask wires. Don't try to remove those!

If you are actually going to handle the CRT or stray near the big capacitors, read about how to correctly short out the high voltages that are used. You probably won't die, but it DOES hurt if you get shocked.

If its one of the sony trinitrons then there is a known fault where they appear dark or too bright regardless of the brightness setting.
It is easily fixed if you have the right setup.

Even though its a nokia monitor its probably got a sony tube.

If you open the case , do not touch the neck of the tube or the large cable attached to the tube that looks like a suction cup.

Follow the instructions at the site above and you should be fine.

I have gotten a couple 21" trinitron monitors like that, and its easy to do once you know how.
