I'm guessing that you cannot go beyond that resolution. Here is my setup...

Samsung SyncMaster 900NF amazon link if you want 2c
Radeon 9600xt
2048x1536@66Hz (when I need it)

If I wanted more space, what's the best way to go beyond it and still maintain quality? Really small text @2048x1536 makes me squint a little, but it's bearable so far. I'm a little puzzled on how to tackle this. I haven't found an LCD I liked. For some reason, the brightness hurts my eyes and I just am not satisfied with the quality compared to a CRT. Am I alone? Also, I think switching would worsen my problem. I don't think switching to a 21"-24" CRT will increase my resolution, but will it improve the picture quality dramatically? I'm looking for some experienced advice here.

Also, why is it that my monitor has a max res of like 1,600 x 1,440 at 75 Hz but my video card still lets me go 2048x1536@66Hz? Does max res of a CRT mean anything? How does this work?

Max resolution in the drivers is 2048x1536 in single display mode. How could you stand the refresh rate that low anyway? I'd get dual monitors.

Yea, 66Hz would kill my eyes in short order, especially @2048x1536.

ATI specs show that the 9600 is only good for 60Hz @ 2048x1536, so I dunno how you are running both your monitor and card out of spec like that (should be able to verify it with your Monitors OSD utilies), but running so close to maximum in both cases is likely making IQ suffer a little, I start noticing it slightly >1600x1200 with my 22" CRT.

Now, if you were talking Dual Link DVI and Apple Cinema 30" LCD........

I'm not sure how my monitor is going out of spec, but you're right...I'm getting about 59Hz instead of what I thought. Will getting a better monitor + video card make a huge improvement? I'm going to stick in another vid card since that supports a higher refresh at 2048x1536

I think that 800 dollar, 24 inch SONY will display 2048x1536.

The only reason I can think of doing that is to run Baldurs Gate II unlocked.

hmm...i plug in another video card and I can get 65Hz going on this. Text is still not fun to read, but I think it's a bit better. I still can't figure out why I'm able to go up this high if my monitor supposedly doesn't support it.

My question now is if 65Hz & 75Hz is a significant difference.

If you want more space, why not go with dual monitors? I don't think I would even be able to stand that high of res + that low of a refresh rate. Also, a bigger monitor will give you more room at the same res.

I think dual monitors would be overkill for me. I'd settle over quality....but I thought any sized monitor would NOT give me more space since it it the same resolution I am aiming for. My understanding is that a certain resolution would show the same amount of stuff no matter what sized monitor you use. Am I wrong?

Thats correct, 800x600 will be 800x600 on a 14" CRT or 22" CRT.

What is it you want to see more of thats making you want to run your resolution that high for anyway? I get a feeling its not really runnning 2048x1536 on that 19" monitor anyway, but if it is, and you still need more desktop real estate, dual monitors is the way to go depending on what you are actually using it for. You're not going to get any more out of that CRT unless you go to a virtual desktop (desktop panning)

Trust me, if you want such a high res, just break down and get a second monitor, you won't regret it, and CRT's are cheap ATM
