CRT going bad?

My old Sony GDM900PS (AG) is making more crinkling noises for the couple of seconds after I turn it on now. Then sometimes for about a minute, it will make a very quick flash a couple times. Sometimes it makes a 'snap' noise during this time too. After that it seems OK. I wanted an LCD eventually but was trying to wait for them to equal the best CRTs first.

I'm no expert, but I'd say your CRT will die soon. I had a 15" Gateway back in the day that died a horrible death this way. However, I've seen similar problems with the three-pronged power cables used on CRTs and other devices.

Some years ago, my old satellite modem's cable went bad. The cable would sometimes make a "clicking" sound off and on rapidly for a second or so, and it would not stay (fully) in its socket. When the DirecWAY rep. told me he would send out a replacement cable, I was rather skeptical because I thought the modem's socket was loose, but it turns out he was correct.

Just as a long shot, if you have another power cable, you might want to swap and see what happens.
