CRT ghosting i think

I got a refurbished (even though the seller on ebay said it wans't refurbished) monitor. I'm not exactly sure what ghosting is, but it looks like ghosting to me. Like i move a little window around (like this reply pop up box) and on the sides of the window, on the left and right sides, there's a couple of ghost windows of the same size, not sure how else to decsribe it. Not sure if it's ghosting or not, but like i said, it seems like it. Tried it in different resolutions at different refresh rates, with different brightnesses, tried everything and it won't go away. Does it sound like ghosting? Thanks.

Do the "ghosted" images ever move or are they always static? Might be burn in.

Yeah, the ghosted images move right along with the real window. There are also some weird vertical lines going down the left side of the screen, they don't move, and aren't really noticeable, but they're there. Maybe a different monitor cable would be better? How this ebay seller has so much good feedback baffles me =/, he also took 2 weeks to ship it.

I'm not sure what i can do though, i could ship it back for another $80. The guy already gave me positive feedback so i'm looking forward to living a huge neg for him, he really deserves it.

I'd check the videocard and cables first. This sounds like a signal reflection or noise issue.

Of course, it could also be a bad monitor. Do at least consider that it could have been damaged during shipping. But if he didn't tell you it was refurb when it was, that's enough in my book to make it a very fishy deal.

I'd try the monitor on another computer, and try a different VGA cable if possible.

I have a CRT in the basement that "Ghosts" bigtime when I first start it up. It gets better after about 20 minutes.

Residual phosphor glow is possible. Try it on a dark screen and move your cursor around. It should get much worse if it's the phosphors..

old crt's may be subject to phosphor ghosting, where the phosphor takes a second to lose its color and electron charge. my old one has it, and when you move the mouse or somethign against a black background, it ghosts. i don't know the line problem however. check your signal cable, and bent pins.

Even ones as little as 2 years old can do this and probably new ones(haven't used one newer than 2 years lately). The phoshors are made to glow for a few ms or else it wouldn't look like a solid screen unless your refresh rate was elventy billion hz.

My computer will do that sometimes before I install video drivers. I am assuming that you have your drivers installed correctly?

Same here I have a monitor that ghosts for about 20mins. Once warmed up its fine again.

I've got a Dell monitor that I purchased from someone in my church a while back. It worked fine for a long while, then it started to do this ghosting thing exactly what you are describing. It has gotten progressively worse over time.

I find that if I smack the side of the monitor, the long part that is flat, I find that the lines disappear. This does not always work mind you, so do this with caution. Sometimes if I smack it to hard the screen will go black and I'll have to give it a real good whack and the screen appears again. I think it has something to do with the firing rods in the back of the monitor. Something is moving around when I hit it to cause this image ghosting. It sounds like a spring of some sort.

I would not recommend opening your monitor unless you've degaused it and have let it set for at least a week. The capacitors in monitors are pretty large and hold a huge charge. You could severely injure or kill yourself if you were to touch this while grounded.

Eventually I'm sure my monitor will die due to this, but for now its just a huge annoyance. It really hurts the eyes after a while, especially if you read lots of text.

If you find an answer to fix it let me know pls, I'll do the same.

I had those lines on a brand new monitor, among other issues. Does that whacking technique actually work? That's what NEC recommended when I called them up, but it didn't do anything.
