CRT disposal

So in the process of moving to a new apartment I've decided that it's finally time for me to do something with my 17" CRT that doesn't work. The thing has a flat screen and is only a couple of years old - maybe used for 8 months before it crapped out (simply won't turn on) and I bought my LCD.

So I really don't like the idea of just tossing it into the dumpster. What do y'all think? Are there usually specialty places that properly dispose of this stuff or does it all go to the landfill no matter what???

It's also possible that somebody could fix the thing with minimal effort, but I doubt that's a realistic avenue given the proliferation of inexpensive/free CRTs and so forth. The more I think about it the closer I get to dumpstering it...any thoughts?

You should definately not toss it. The average crt has about 12 pounds of heavy metals in it. I do not know where you are located but check your phone book for a local recycling facility. They should be able to either recycle the monitor themselves or at least give you the name of a company that does.

Note there may be a small disposal fee associated (here it is 2 dollars if you recycle just a monitor but free if you recycle a whole system) but the cost is worth it. Also please be aware that in some jurisdictions it is in fact illegal to dump things such as monitors due to their heavy metal content.

I took mine to a e-recycler that was having a drop off day. It means you might have to wait a while to get rid of it though.

Well that's cool - I try to be as green-minded as possible and that's why I asked the question. No dumpster it is. Guess it'll go back into the new closet until I find the right facility.

Thanks much...

Dell? I'd rather build my own recycling service than pay for Dell.

:D

In seriousness, I live in Portland and it's very technically/culturally progressive so I'm sure there is a lot of resources. I just get lazy when it comes to the phone book...

The dumping fee where I live is $25 for a computer or monitor... as a result I have several CRTs kicking around.

you have to check with your city and see what you should do with it.

edit: if it cost money than just throw it off a building or out a window.

I've used Envirocycle a few times. $25 buys a UPS shipping label that'll let you ship up to 69lbs of electronic stuff - they've got a list at their site of what they will accept. I've done it two or three times now for a monitor and some junk electronics.
The site has a section (link on the left toolbar there) that details their CRT recycling process.

Hi, In my part of the country you wait for garbage day or the day before and put it out next to your garbage. The Scanvengers will always pick them up. May not work in your neighborhood. Luck, Jim

Dell, HP, and IBM/Lenovo all offer this service...... At various costs depending on if you are buying a new machine or not. There's a lot of 3rd party providers out there as well.

It's illegal everywhere to dump a CRT in landfills, and vacant lots. EPA wrote that law, not local jurisdictions.

Anyway..... If local recycling center takes it for small fee, or for same as ship to service, go for it. If you leave it at the curb in the hope it gets stolen....... What makes you think that person isn't going to toss it in a lake, or recycle it properly?
