Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

I thought this movie was definitly something special. The fight/chase scenes were totally amazing I thought. Becuase they were so "unrealistic" it mean that you could just enjoy them for what they were and not worry that they weren't really "real". And I thought the whole story was really good too. All in all, very cool movie I thought.

I wonder what the American perspective is. Not enough guns?

american perspective is that the fight scenes were unrealistic.

most asians though should be use to these type of fight scenes. i was actually dissapointed that it was only air walking/floating instead of outright flying. 🙂 too many crazy chinese movies for me. hehe

just the zhang zi yi factor makes me want to see that movie again... *happy thoughts, happy thoughts* hahha 🙂

There is a common misconception among societies outside the USA: we love guns in everyway. I own guns but, I do not have to have one on my hip all the times and do not have to see them in every movie. I lived in Singapore for 5 yrs and they thought that in the USA we walked around with guns on our hips. We are merely protecting our rights to protect our families.

the movie was absolutely beautiful! incredible use of cinematography and color, definitely worth the watch, whether it has guns or not!

I thought it was a pretty good movie, though I must admit sometimes the featherly leaping looked kind of fake. That is about my only problem with the movie. I thought the ending was one of the better ones in a while. I was really glad to see it... I thought 2000 was a crappy year for movies until I saw this, Traffic, and You Can Count On Me all within a few weeks of each other.

Is it possible for someone to be a cooler guy than Chow Yun Fat?

I really liked the movie. I know the jumps looked unrealistic, but its a to be fantasy/adventure/Action movie.

They have to be pretty darn cool to beat him. 😉

Action film of the year? What was that all about? Crouching Tiger does not come even close to delivering any kind of expectations.

The story was loosely thrown together, the characters came in and out at random times, and the action.. well the movie shifted from one fight to another in a long, ongoing chain.

I'm not really sure why this movie earned high ranks among the critics. The film gets two stars for some interesting shots and angles, but Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is definitely not worth much praise.

Tomcat I think you missed what the plot was. If you watch it again the plot/story is not at all "loose" it's just that you are viewing it as a begining-to-end story of a battle between good and evil for a sword. Rather the plot centres around the "princess" character, and the relationships of the central characters.

Thats what made this movie so enjoyable for me, it wasn't just a "formula" story.

just got the mpgs from my friend in my residence hall, looked through the movie, and it seems kinda slow moving at times

I saw this movie about two weeks ago and I absolutely love it!
Everything that I ever imagined when I was a kid reading a kung fu book became a reality.
That fight scene above the tree is like a butterfly dance.
It's also a very romantic story without cheapy ending.
I am going to watch it again this weekend.

I thought it was a good movie but one thing bothered me............

Chow Yun Fat has this great life long enemy (Jade Fox) and the final climactic showdown is like 30 seconds........ WTF 😕

Cheers,
Aquaman

Hahahhaa, yeah, the movie was a lot more women-orientated, a lot more fights between the two females characters.

Hmmmm, I don't know. I think it would have been better if it had a bunch of hot naked chicks running around nibbling on each other. No?

<<it wasn't just a "formula" story>> ????

quite oppositely it was very much a formula story. For example have you seen "Aladin"? Or the other host of movies that deliever this same theme of a girl of society breaking with society to go to a boy of the streets?

Frankly I'm going to have to agree with Tomcat here and say that it was a good action movie but not a great film. It spent far too many minutes fighting battles that resolved absolutely nothing in the scheme of things. This combinded with the many levels of predictitability that kept me NOT jumping made me walk away from CTHD with a sense that I should go and see something else, that was good.

If you expect this movie to be great, skip it and catch either "O Brother Where Art Thou" or "Traffic". If you don't expect much from "Bent over Tiger, Horny Dragon" then thats your film. Also if you're from Asian background probability shows that you should like this "Tiger" as well.

Uncouth - Mmmm yeah but the thing is that in Alladin and Disney stories, the girl doesn't commit suicide for her sins in the end. 🙂

And you are definitly simplifying the story here. Its not about a girl who runs from her upper class society to live with an underdog looser. It's about who the girl is, and the decisions she makes which in this film, are anything but formulaic.

Z24 - I saw it in IMAX too but in Australia we have some pretty ordinary IMAX theatres. Not that it wasn't a nice cinema though.

Chow Yun Fat gave the most impressive performance I have seen from him. I don't have a lot of respect for most of the movies he's been in.
