crossover,patch,twisted?

ok
right now I have only two computers I want to connect.
the NICs and software is all set up.
I have a patch cable at home, can I turn it in to a crossover cable or do I
have to buy a new one??

You can turn any regular patch cable into a Crossover cable. Connecting 2 computers you need 2 NIC's in one of the computers, and unless you use a Hub you need to connect them with a crossover cable. Just look at the guide that Jack linked, but as it says in that thread you'll need a crimping tool.
