I have a working crossover cable, i am looking to transfer a large amount of data ~20GBs between two computers (one lappy, one desktop).

Anyways, i have never done this before, are there any things that i need to watch out for? do i need to configure the IP's?

And if i get it working how long should i expect 20GBs to take?

The Desktop has XP Pro and the lappy has MCE

EDIT: alrite guys im back...i have successfully connected the computers and they see each other but i cannot access the documents on either....I have simple file sharing and remote connection enabled...

My Workgroup name is HOME.

The message i get is "Home is not accessible. You mightn not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator....The network path was not found."

You will have to manually configure the NIC IP's to be on the same network.

make one pc 10.1.10.100 and the other one 10.1.10.101. You can leave the gateway blank. You may have to turn off the Windows firewall and will need share a drive on one of the PC's; also make sure your guest account is enabled. (or you will have to enter u/p from the PC you are trying to map from)

Remember to change the NIC's back to DHCP ( or whatever they are set to now) after you are done transferring.

Cant attest to how fast the files will transfer. Depends on size and qty of files, drive speed, NIC speed, what else you got running, etc. Too many variables.

Is this similar to your solution:

"....assign different IP addresses and the same subnet masks to the TCP/IP properties of each computer: Computer 1 could be IP 192.168.0.1 & subnet 255.255.255.0, and Computer 2 could be IP 192.168.0.2 & subnet 255.255.255.0. You might also need to type in the same Workgroup Name in the Identification tab. "

Yes that is similar, but in windows the masks autofill when you input a IP so its kind of a moot point to add that information. The speed should be about the same as you would expect on a 100MBps LAN maybe even a bit faster because there is no other network traffic. 100Mpbs is basically 12.5 megaBYTES per second, in theory it could go that fast, i wouldnt expect faster then 10 though, good luck!

As paperlantern already answered, yes that is similar. You can basically use any private addressing scheme, as long as the 4th octet is a different number (1-255) on each PC.

Good luck!

Possibly stupid question: Are you trying to browse to the share or are you typing \\<IP Address>\<Share Name> in the address bar of Windows Explorer?
