Crossover and Cable Modem

Well, I don't really know much about networking, but I'm trying to set up my computer and my roomates so that we can both use my cable modem. We've each got ethernet cards, and I have a crossover cable. I have my cable modem hooked up through USB. I can't get our two computers networked. I have Win2k and he has 95. I'm wondering what settings I need to set up. If there's a step by step description of how to do this somewhere on the internet, feel free to direct me there. Thanks.

well, a crossover cable can be used to directly connect you each to each other...but won't be enough to allow you to share a 'net connection

you would need a router, a hub, or a switch

check out practicallynetworked for some more info on this stuff

edit: fixed link

I was asking someone what the best way to do this was, before I got the crossover cable. They said we could connect our ethernet cards with that, then use Win2k's internet sharing to have the other computer connected to the cable modem, as well. I don't know how to set the software up, however.

ok, you can do that. that would effectively make your computer the "router"

here's what you do:

installed TWO network cards in your main win2k box
run the cable modem into one card, and the crossover cable from the other card into second computer's network card

in win2k, go into network properties for the 1st NIC and enable ICS (internet connection sharing)

set the IP address of the second NIC to 192.168.0.1 and subnet mast 255.255.255.0 and then make the second computers tcp /ip properties be "obtain automatically" i.e. DHCP

i'm sure non of this makes sense, but if you follow my link above it has a good guide on how to set up ICS in win2k

<< Is it okay if the cable modem is connected through USB, or will I need another card? >>

i fixed my link...it should work now

ahhh...i see, you have your cable modem go directly into your usb port eh?

well, then i *think* you should be ok..you just don't need 2 NIC's anymore
