Crossfire/SLI for HDTV's?

Can someone please explain why SLI/Crossfire is recommended for LCD's 24" and up? I have a 46" HDTV that I game with, what's the reason I need two ATI cards rather than one? I'd like to game at 1080P settings btw.

Would a 4870x2 suffice better?

depends on what your doing..

usually because a 46 HDTV will fall in the lines of a 24 inch. 1920x1080 resolution.

If your htpc is a gaming htpc, you will need a high end card or suffer massive shuttering effect.

Other then that, ive ran hdtv setups off 9600GT's even using the onboard sound on motherboard fed via spdif cable, and had HDCP work over HDMI.

You get what you need.. If your not a gamer, the lower end ATI HD cards will do a great job.

It really depends on the games you play. Take a look around the web for reviews of the games you like. Most sites review at multiple resolutions including 1920x1200 which is close enough to 1080p to give you a good idea of what kind of card you need. Most games other than Crysis and a small handful of others, will run just fine at 1080p with a HD4870, GTX 260, or GTX 280.
