I'm a registered Independent, but I don't vote for but a handful of Republicans and they are in local elections. So, I answered Democrat voting (actually voted) for Kerry.

I normally vote republican. In 2000 I voted for McCain as a write in but this year I will be voting for the most viable candidate to unseat Bush. He has IMHO done a disservice to this country.

voted nader in 2000, not because I like his politics but becase I didn't think either gore or bush was fit for the job, and I said, "how bad could bush screw it up? even if he totally tanks things, four years of a bad president might just be what we need to get more people involved in politics and thinking for themselves"

I know I was wrong about the first part, I'll know whether I got that last part right on wed. morning 😉

I'm either voting for Bush or a write-in for president (probably the write-in), but I'm voting for the Democrat canidate for congress, and straight down the Republican column for local offices (mayor, school board, etc).

I'm the same way. Though I have supported Republicans in the past, I will never again vote for ANY Republican under ANY circumstances. It's just too risky.

Not especially. The readers and posters at AT tend to be more highly educated, better read, and have a wider perspective than the general population. Actually the internet as a whole is like this. Which would explain why Kerry is doing better on the internet than in the US as a whole 😉

Try not to think that way - it's what gets people like Bush elected by folks who have sworn off EVER voting for a democrat (whether because of Clinton, or whatever).

You always have to be prepared to change your mind, or at least to go against your normal behaviour, when appropriate.

Yes and no - hijacking political parties isn't a new phenomenon, but it has become very prevalent since about the mid-90's.

For the most part, it has been historically true that a party's line doesn't change too much from election to election, so for the mildly interested, party loyalty is a pretty good way to vote.

But with left-leaning parties shifting to the center, and neoconservatism gaining popularity in right-leaning parties around the world, people really need to evaluate the platforms of their candidates carefully, since they may not stand for what they did 'last time'.

(We had 8 years at the provincial level in Ontario, Canada, when people ignored the platform, and thought they were electing the 'Progressive' Conservative party, but ended up with a much more extreme neoconservative/neoliberal group).

my only problem comes when it's impossible to get information on the canidates.

like this upcoming election, I'm going to be voting on a new sheriff. I regularly read local papers, but I haven't seen any information about either canidate, so I'll be voting for the Republican (usually my default vote when it comes to local elections).

I agree, there are bad people regardless of party. I consider Bush one of them.
