Cross-Over Cable + DSL = no Internet or network. Help!

Well the only problem with that is that i already bought the crossover cable ($20) + i would actually have to fetch out 50$ for it now only to get a refund later. 🙁

but by the looks of it i should have gone w/ a router from the very get-go. The reason i didn't is because the client PC only will remain here 6 more months then it is heading off to college.

The other PC definitely is sending and receiving packets now (the client). But the net still doesn't work. Both Pc's are still on the same workgroup and i can share files between them.

hrm. seems like some prgress is being made.

perhaps could it be that the DSL provider only allows one pc to be on the I'net at the same time? Just a thought.

Yeah, If it were me, I'd go get a DSL Router/Switch and save myself the headaches of working with ICS. I beat my head against ICS for awhile with my home network and cable, finally wised up and got a router/switch, and never looked back.

Are you running any kind of firewall like ZoneAlarm? If so, disable it until you get everything working. If it's ZA, you will need to add a trusted IP address or range so the 2 can communicate properly.

Make sure that you set ICS up on the correct connection, (don't ask me which one, it's been too long)

nope thats not it. you are on an internal network with the ip of 192.168.0.1 and such. the isp only sees one computer getting out at the ip that is being assigned by the dsl router. keep toying with it, it sounds like you are getting close. im hunting on google right now to see if there are any people out there with the same issues.

It seems like i am almost there. I am trying to setup IE to login w/ the name and pass just like this one has to.

I can feel it. i will win!

ICS is telling me now that there is a IP conflict and that only the host shuold be able to use the 192.168.0.1 IP and i should configure it as such ( it is)..hrm

Are sure about it?

CrossOver CAT5e should be $1-2 for 3', and about $4 for 15'.

Even Routers can be found for $10.

May be you bought something that is more capable than just a CAT5 wire. 😕

What would really piss you off even more is if I told you that the crossover cable is nothing more than a regular cat5 cable w a couple wires switched. It costs them nothing more to manufacture. A hardware router would have definitely been the way to go. Even when the the other pc moves you have future expansion possibilities and a hardware firewall.

the Ip's are set properly. Gateways' are set. Subnet mask's are set. I can transfer files between the 2 pcs. I cannot go online, however, on the other PC. nothing will change this.

As i stated on the host PC i cannot go into the 'properties and then advanced' tab and then see what's there b/c it gives me a message saying that XP cannot detect the hardware settings for this device. use system restore to fix this. but as i stated before i cannot system restore this PC as i do not know when the possible problem could have ocurred.

is there any other way i can set the host PC to "share this internet connection"

Switch ICS Off and try to use this.

Hey Overkiller.... If you're interested in a wireless router w/ 4 RJ45 connections on the back also, you pay for the shipping and I'll send it to you. It's a Belkin F5D6231-4 wireless router. Fairly new and used for probably 3 days. I switched all my computers over to a total D-Link System. Yur welcome to it. PM me and let me know if you're interested....
