Cross over cable and connecting 2 computers

Here's what I'm trying to do: I am going to be buying my first ever pre-built system in about two weeks (gasp!) and I want to transfer my files over to the new system as quickly and painlessly as possible. I honestly don't want to go through the hassle of burning CD-RWs and swapping them constanty, especially since my current CDR drive is flaky with this install so what I'm thinking about doing is snagging some CAT5e from work and making a crossover cable and connecting the two computers via ethernet.

This should work, right? Using a cross over cable to directly connect the two?

I did a bit of quick reading using the AnandTech FAQ and found a good link detailing how to create a crossover cable, so that doesn't look to be too much of an issue. I have the cable, the ends and the crimper thanks to work, so no biggie there.

What protocols should I set up in both computers to get this to work? My current computer has XP Pro, the new one will have XP Home SP1. (Hey, work is paying for it, I won't argue with them)

TIA

Just give them some IP address on the same subnet and mask and that should be it. I'd just buy a crossover and not bother with the hassle. But, if you're good at crimping, go for it!

EDit: same subnet, but different IP, obviously

Thanks guys. I only plan on doing this once so I think I'll stick with making the cable myself. (Unless it's under ten bucks :p )

But thanks for the advice!
