Critique my demo reel *new cut added*

hey guys,
Anyone have any suggestions for my demo reel? The pacing isn't perfect because the music (yes, Linkin Park....) is a temp track... any suggestions? Thanks!

New edit up! It's over the top and silly and the last 30 seconds will not be on the final cut - just wanted to include the first kissing scene I ever filmed Wink

15 second leader is completely uncalled for.

Anyways, I really like your stuff, for a freshman, right? I could never think up some of the stuff you did when i was taking film classes (although, they were required classes and i didnt to be there.) But yeah, your whole reel comes together very well, except for the rap video parts, which really don't mix in with any of the more emotional shots, and which doesn't show off any impressive cinematography. I also think you can cut out some of the washed out 16mm work (only the stabbing scene comes to mind). A demo reel should show off your best stuff. If you're just using mediocre stuff as filler cause the song is too long or something, you need to rethink it. Anyways, good job. I think after finishing your whole program you'll make a mark on the film industry.

Thanks for the kind words... The rap video footage was an odd fit - I just had to show that I have worked on videos but I didn't direct it (I was the D.P.) and the shots were boring... I'm going to re-edit it and get rid of some of the 16mm footage too.. thanks!

Well the video tells me three things:

1. Your taste in music sucks
2. You like to hire bad actors
3. Whoever does your camera work sucks

The first 15 seconds are garbage... this isn't 1993 and you're probably not using Premiere 1.0...

I'd be bitter too if I was a 22 year old virgin...

That line made as little sense as one of your plots.. but then again I'm not a fatass that asks for girl advice on a computer forum.

count it!

I dont have a whole lot to say because I dont have speakers on this sytem, so just from an imagy standpoint I love it. You have a nice grasp of what needs to be in the lens and what doesnt. The lens in the audiences eye, and you seem to know that and not lose sight of that. I use to do some storyboarding type work and someone once told me that you should be able to tell a story with words of sounds. Keep that in mind, because I think you're doing it. don't lose sight of that.

Good work! One of these days I'll post some of my stuff.

What type of work are you trying to get with this reel?

If you're trying to get directing work, it's a horrible reel. It doesn't show at all how well you can direct. You'd have better results showing the best scene from each film you've done and part of the music video.

If you're trying to get DP work, then it's not bad because that's what it displays.

A few things.

1. The music choice is good but depending on what people are viewing it but for the most part they have it on mute.

2. The first 15 seconds, remove them, its 15 seconds wasted by the person viewing the reel.

3. Loose all the footage where the camera is obviosly being held by someone walking. Try to make the whole picture frame work for you without you having to move the camera too much. ( this was expecialy noticing in the beginining.

4. Too many close shots.

5. Too long, it gets repeatetive, cut it down to 1:00-1:30

6. By all means keep the final scenes, the gun scene was by far the best. I was actualy shocked because it was so good, colors contrast and everything.

Demoreel watchers get so many reels it isnt even funny. Keep it short and most importantly keep it interesting. Dont save the best scenes to the last. Some reel judges would probably stop watching in the first 5-10 seconds, some would last 40 seconds but I doubt many people would watch more which is a shame (gun scene, so good 😀)

you should get one of those steady-cam thingimajigers where the camera is mounted in a suspension that you can hold while you move around. they seem to do a pretty good job of taking out the "guy holding the camera" look, while still leaving you mobile.

What's the point of asking for people's advice if you're just going to completely ignore it?

The only impression that I get with this reel is that you're trying to cover really bad work by not really showing any of it.
