Just got my P4 1.7 Ghz today and couldn't belive how small it is. The heatsink and fan are massive compared to the cpu, somehow I thought it would be bigger than the P3. I bought a Thermaltake volcano heatsink and fan to go with it. anyone using one and are they any good? :Q

They are small indeed.

All Intel P4 Heatsinks tend to be very good. I'm not normally a Tt fan, but I'm sure the Volcano will cool sufficiently

I walked into my local hardware store a couple of days ago and saw my first 478 motherboard - they really are absolutely tiny! I'm tempted to get one just because they're so dinky...

The Thermaltake is cheap and cools effectively. See the review at VR-Zone. The design is not as refined mechanically and somewhat noisier compared to others, but you cannot beat its $8 plus shipping price. (Check Pricewatch for price.)

If price is no objection, here is a high end alternative at Cooler Star. The Thermoengine ARKUA 8568 with a copper core. It should give you another couple degrees improvement over the Thermaltake, at a huge price increase.

Thanks for the replies, Have just built the P4 system and it's running fine, the fan and heatsink where easy to fit, much better than FCPGA heatsinks where I was always worried about damaging the motherboard. I don't intend to overclock at the moment until I get a couple of case fans. haven't done any benchmarks yet just letting the system settle in first. Most impressed with WinXP, detected all my hardware plus the network was up and running without any hassle and internet conection was there from the start. Nice one Microsoft.
