Criminal Mischief 2

Last night while walking home from a bar downtown, my friend and I decided it would be a good idea to karate-kick some temporary no parking signs the city put up the day before. Stupid and juvenile? Of course. Regret it? Of course. We loudy kicked over about 5 signs or so en route to her apartment.

In any case, we got back to her place and were chilling watching TV when we heard some LOUD pounding on the front door. The cops had somehow found us.

They gave me a ticket for Criminal Mischief 2 and a court date. They gave her one too, but she went ape-sh!t on them for some reason, was arguing and being uncooperative, and they took her to jail. She's still there as far as I know. They told me to go home. I did.

My question: wtf is criminal mischief 2? Misdemeanor? Felony? I just want to pay my fine for being a moron and get it over with. The fine amount on the ticket said TBD. I'd rather not go to court. I Googled it but there's so much legalese on the net that I can't make heads or tails of wtf I'm facing. :(

Next time, try to drink more. Because alcohol seems to be doing wonders for your life, hungfarover.

The answer to your question is another question. How much damage did you cause?

$0.01 to $100.00 is a misdemeanor.
$100 to $1000 is a class A misdemeanor.
Over $1000 is a class B felony.

Of course that's just for one state. Your state may have a different cost setup.

She was having a bad night. Add drink and it's a worse night. She's got "little big-man syndrome"; a chip on her shoulder...she's feisty anyway but when she's drunk look out. Yes she's a little cute. No I won't post pics - this isn't a YAGT.

I have no idea what set her off, but she was yelling and telling them to get the fsck out of her building and yada yada yada...not a good scene. I'm wondering how long they'll hold her...

Your friend deserves jail. I love it when brats get their just desserts. If she had influential parents or something that would be even better.

We damaged one sign, the rest we just knocked over. These are little saw-horse-looking fold-away wooden portable signs.

You aren't serious are you? City/county land, they can do what ever they'd like to do with it.

Wrong if the city put a big hole in the middle of a sidewalk with no warning tape you can bet if someone fell in they would be sued for all your tax dollars.

get a lawyer,
usually you get get it down to a civil infraction or something and pay a fine.

legalities

Looks like it's a misdemeanor, since you didn't damage anything

LOL god no. I was having People's Court flashbacks where the defendent invariably files a countersuit, sometimes on the spot, with absolutely nothing other than anger fueling their argument.

Private Pyle! What are you doing to my beloved corps?

I am thinking Class C or even less. You in college? Go to the legal aid office. They will laugh but they can help.

Been there done that. Most of the time the cops just try to scare you a little and then let you go. It's weird that they actually gave you a ticket.
