If you're a conservative, it appears that Detroit continues on its glide path to Somalia-like failed state status. For progressives of a certain ilk, I guess it's looking like a pretty choice destination - basically no republicans, racially diverse, and now they've reigned in the pigs who would just be abusing their positions of power anyway.

Detroit is a fucking basketcase. That's what happens in a city where the government simply does not work. Doesn't help that 20% unemployment is basically the norm over there as well.

At this point, I doubt any amount of money could help Detroit. It has been a city without a plan for too long. They make a big deal out of trying this or that, but it never seems to achieve what they shoot for. Over the years, I've there for work visits, the big auto show, and even tried the casinos a few times. Every time I visit there it seems worse.

Some of the videos I've seen of the detroit council don't make this story surprising in the least.

 
What has a happened in Detroit may just be a precursor to what will happen in other American cities.
When we treat workers in China the same as we do as workers in the US and allow brutal dictatorships to manipulate trade and steal our manufacturing base, the eventual impovershipment of US cities is a given.

Detroit (and Michigan in general) depended on one industry for far too long, failed to diversify, and now suffers the consequences.

Can't speak for Phokus, but in MY Detroit there would be plenty of jobs since I would never have allowed a country like China to price fix and exploit its workers to kill off American businesses. I would never allow unfair trade to let what happened in Detroit happen.
And, I would give Michigan it's fair share of tax monies it pays to Washington, instead of letting it be sent to welfare states in the US.
And I never would have allowed a time limited massive tax cut for the rich to encourage automakers to cut back on development to pay dividends.
And lastly, I would set mileage standards that would have prompted US automakers to develop cars that could compete in a high gas price market.

Detroit is a perfect example of liberalism run amok.

No doubt that the collapse of the rust belt contributed to the problems of Detroit, but a lot of those problems were brought on by liberal policies and groups. The union have a lot to do with this problem with their overly high wages and bad work rules. Made Detroit uncompetitive in the global market and once the auto plants started to leave it was all down hill.

So if you ran the country instead of one shit hole like Detroit we would instead have an entire country living at a lower standard of living than we currently have.

Do some research into Wal-mart and what it has done to the American standard of living, specifically that of the poor. Were it not for the cheap Chinese goods the typical poor American wouldn't have multiple TVs, cell phones, tons of clothes etc etc.

We traded our low skilled high paying jobs for tons and tons of cheaply made goods. A few thousand Americans may have lost out, but the other 200 hundred million Americans made out good.
 
Are you really blaming Detroit on liberalism? Just about every big city is populated and run by lefties. Detroit has specific problems unrelated to the political ideology of its leaders.
