Every year, I get my credit report checked from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion for free from https://www.freescore360.com/ and
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/. There are a lot of so-called credit monitoring services such as identity guard, privacy guard, life lock, trusted id, protect my id and so forth.

They all charge a monthly fee, from $10 to $20 depending on the level of service chosen at sign up.

While credit monitoring doesn't protect you from identity theft, was wondering if anyone belongs to these services and are they worth the cost.

Complete waste of time, just a money making venture for these companies. You can monitor your credit yourself.

It would be cheaper and more secure to freeze your credit and then thaw/refreeze as needed. Plus freezing your credit has additional perk- vast reduction of postal junk mail.

Only worth it if you have some reason to be actively checking your report.

It was years between getting my free report and when I pulled it recently it had a lot of bad info. Some of it is just falling off due to old age and some I am actively disputing since it is newer. If you have no errors on the annual or you are just disputing one or two items it is pretty much a waste. If you are trying to clean up a mess (my report had an alternate SSN for god's sake) then it is handy. I am nearly done with the cleanup and will cancel once I am.

My bank had tried to talk me into the free trial and I can cancel it after. I went for it just because I was curious to see what my credit score is, then I canceled it. Was a pita to cancel. They go on about how if someone stole your identity they could ruin your life and all that... they have a point, but is it really worth spending an extra $30 a month or whatever "just in case". It's not like ID theft is something that happens that much, just have to be smart and shred anything that has your personal info on it, destroy old credit cards, etc... Unfortunately your info can leak from companies that don't take the proper precautions *cough* Sony but even if you have such service it's not like it will stop it from happening, it will just tell you.

You have to draw the line somewhere, there's all sorts of companies that try to sell specific types of insurance. I even had some company trying to sell me furnace insurance lol.
