Credit card whistleblower sentenced

I have very limited understanding of what's going on, but if that's all he did as stated in the article, I think this whole sentencing is BS.

<< Accompanied by a legal officer, he went to a machine that issues tickets for the Paris Metro and, using a doctored card, bought himself some tickets.

The banks then pounced and Mr Humpich found himself on trial for fraud and counterfeiting.
>>

This is ridiculous. The bank was probably pissed that he asked for $150,000.

<< should have used it himself........ >>

Exactly. I can say to anyone who finds this kind of thing out... Don't demonstrate it to the credit card company. No matter how hard it is to do, no matter how complicated it is for you to find out, DO NOT demonstrate it to the credit companies. They will arrest you without a second thought. If you're in jail you can't tell anyone how to do it, correct? (at least according to their flawed logic) Either tell noone and forget about it or use it and take the company for $10,000,000 and escape to another country. There is no other option to stay out of jail. Blackmail won't work, neither will just informing the perople that they have a vulnerability.

man, that sucks for the guy, and all he wanted to do was help.. for a little bit of money... 🙂

<< Man, is there any reason NOT to hate the French? >>

I've heard nice things about their women, but then again they don't shave or bath very much either soo...

Heh.. it's the armpit hair that turns me on..

man..these people should just keep these stuff to themselves.
its like going up to a cop and demonstrating how u can speed on the road and then they give u ticket for speeding

Hmm weird...i think perhaps he started getting himself in hot water when he wanted to SELL his knowledge. That's a bit of a no-no. "Hey, I know how to break into your bank and steal a bunch of money. I'll tell you how it's done for $150,000." COuld he really expect anything else? I think in the future such people should have the other party sign a bunch of documents first 🙂

Indeed, on the right woman it can be a turn on. But on many women it can be very gross.

Back on subject: that is the most moronic thing I've heard lately! Don't companies often hire computer hackers to expose potential vulnerabilities before they can be exploited by the less scrupulous hackers? What this guy did amounts to the same thing and they crucified him. Dipsh!ts.

Yep. He SHOULD have retained a lawyer, and had immunity papers drawn up before he did anything. No immunity, no demonstration.

If they refused, he should have simply published on the internet detailed instructions on how the security hole works.
