Anyone know if you can change a CC for another one to get freebies or points when you buy stuff with it?

I have a Mastercard that goes back to 98 and i buy a lot with it but i don't get anything like points or miles etc.

I don't want to change it loose all those years of credit history.

What?! You can't lose credit history really. Once its there its there and often very difficult to get removed honestly. But if its good history then don't worry yourself.

Credit Card companies honestly don't care about how long you've been with them as long as you pay them money and hopefully (from their point of view) keep a balance every month.

Just FYI if thats your only CC you can probbably afford to get another one. But if you are just going to keep it and never use it cancel the card because it looks bad on your credit to have an unused card.

i heard Suzy orman say that when you cancel a CC acount that has several years of history, when you go apply for a new CC or loan they base your score on what you have now and not those last 5 years because you cancel it.

Ummm incorrect. If he closed the credit card account it will hurt him. He should just keep the old card account open and get a new one. Just use the new credit card.

Or you could call your existing cc company and ask them to upgrade to a newer type account. When i cancled a CapitalOne cc they went through hell to keep me from canceling. And i hardly ever used it. They offered to upgrade me to one that was better as far as benifets go.

That way you would be able to keep your account history. Like other peole said you will not realy lose Credit history but with that company you would lose account history. Depends on the company about how important they take it.

I've done it before. I've had a credit card with Citibank for years and when they announced their new Dividend card (the one that gets you 5% cash back at grocery stores, drug stores, and gas stations) I just called them up and asked them to change my card to a dividend card. I kept the same credit card number and everything. It can't get much easier than that.
