Credit card APRs skyrocketing?

Just got notified by Citi the purchase APR is going from prime + 5.49% to prime + 10.99%.

My Amex purchase APR recently went up to prime + 17.99%.

Wowza.

Is this a repost?

i'm no businessman, but isn't this juts encouraging people to not spend on their cards?

If people were smart. I'm sure many CC holders won't pay any attention and then get all pissed off when they're paying even higher interest rates.

I also think they're doing it because they just don't have the available credit to keep loaned out while they're waiting for repayment.

Anyone with Bank of America get something similar? I just got a card from them at 13.99 (I'm ok with that because it is my emergency disaster I'm-about-to-be-homeless-if-I-don't-use-this card)

USAA has always been good to my family. I shoulda got in there when I was still a dependent. :|

My Chase Business card is holding steady at 8.99%. Hopefully this trend is onlyfor personal cards.

Wow, I just tried registering, and it actually worked. I guess the "children of US military" actually means that, even if you're not a dependent anymore

nothing here

but then again, all my balances are fixed and the only variable ones get paid off every momth

I have 2 Citi cards both with $20k+ credit lines.

Citi closed one outright due to inactivity (hadn't used it in 5 months) and dropped the APR on the other to 13.99%.

I don't understand their logic but whatever.

I called them and the rep said it's due to the "financial markets" and nothing I personally did. But they did confirm that the rate increase was correct.

If you pay your balance in full each month, who cares what the APR is?
Yep, hope I can always do this. I honestly have no idea what my rate's for my cards are.

also on my primerica MC
its nice to know i can charge a full automobile on my card for cheaper than most peoples loans

Citi Amex Platinum = 9.99%
Citi mtvU Visa = 13.99%

Don't think they have changed. I never knew they were so low.

My Citi Platinum is at 7.99% and has been for the last 5 years since i received it... and they recently (last month) almost doubled my credit limit to 22K ... 😕

Chase is at 10.99%, rarely use it but they have changed the payment due date on it and would have had a late payment. Called the fvckers up and told them if I even thought they were going to charge me a late fee I would immediately cancel the card. No late fee charged, but that card is now on permanent standby.

After seeing what the housing bubble did to banks, all the big boys are now scared shitless of their enormous credit card bubble.

Recall, since people can't use their house as an ATM any more, they'll be turning to credit cards more and more to make ends meet. Eventually they'll default on these loans as well.

The best part is, credit cards are unsecured debt. There's nothing to repossess in a lot of cases. If someone blows their mortgage payments, the bank can at least take back the house and recoup some losses. But if someone defaults on their credit card, how do you repossess that dinner they paid for on credit? That DVD they rented? How do you get that tank of gas back?

It's arguably a more dangerous bubble than housing was.

This country has been running on debt for so long now people have forgotten what actual fiscal responsibility looks like.

My credit line sure as hell won't be changing though. Pay the card off every month, to the penny, well before deadline. Banks used to hate people like me for not paying any interest or fees, which is where their profits come from on CCs, but now they're just thankful I'm not destroying their bottom line like most of suburban America.

I just noticed that my chase card jumped to 18.99%. After I pay off my balance, I won't be using that card unless they drop my APR.

Mine did the same. I sent an email complaining since I never have missed paying in full and it went back down to what it was instantly.

I just sent a similar email to Citi. If they don't change the terms back, I can opt out and keep my current terms for ~2 more years.

Yes it does. My husband is retired military and both my children (who are not in the military) are USAA members.

On the topic: Discover just REDUCED my APR. Go figure.
