Apparently the Zen Extras are a little cheaply made as more people report damage
with handling that other MP3 players could handle. They are definitely priced better than competitors though, so maybe it is worth the risk.

You can't be serious about OD's reseller rating.

I have this player and have used mine for about 2 years.

Every cpl months I find myself looking for a new player, but have yet to find anything to replace it for the same $$$.

Pros:
Low Cost
30GB
Data Storage
USB 2.0
Nice LCD
Powerful
Upgradable with 2.5" HDs

Cons:
Needs software for transfers
Changes directory structure after transfer (Only an issue if you want to restore all the files back after a HD loss)
Some have had Hard Disk issues (stuck at EAX screen)
Larger than the Dell and iPod

I recently had an experience with office depot that makes me purchase from them much more then Staples. After 2+ months they gave me my money back due to crappy techsupport from Uniden eventhough they say that they only give money back within 14 days. Excellent company IMO.

Lucky you. Three OD around here are awful, bad attitude, although we buy a lot office supply from them. Once, only once I used coupon, they made sure the address on my ID matched the mailing address. OM, in another hand, are very pleasant and helpful.

You can also choose to get the 40GB Nomad Zen Xtra at Staples for around 175$ ($220 - 12% Customer Appreciation -$20 easy rebate) plus tax.

It randomly would only broadcast on the left channel, and I had not abused it by dropping it or anything else. I RMA'd it and they sent me back another one with little hassle. This one lasted 3 months, just enough to screw me outside the warranty period. The player just crashed, and a blinking error logo comes up everytime i try to boot it. I cant reinstall the firmware, because the system says the hdd is messed up. Very dissapointed to say the least, and looking at their (creative's) forums, I see more than a few people having these problems.

The player was incredible when it worked; the interface was amazing, and simple, but that doesnt matter when your player doesnt work... :(

Oh, and btw, the software SUCKS. It is terrible, I somehow deleted the index of my music library twice and had to reimport the music each time. Dont ask how, I just am pissed off at the company right now. Just my opinion though, see what others have to say.

Office Depot has disappointed me greatly.

I made an order for one of these Zens on Wednesday of last week, and there were still plenty in stock according to the site. Now my order was cancelled, no notification was sent to me, I had to call customer service to find out where my Zen was, and they told me that someone in front of me got it, and they are never getting any more back in stock. Ever. The representative wasn't particularly helpful, and told me the only alternative they might be able to offer me cost something like $9400. I think it might have been a REAL jukebox, or something.

Whatever the case, I'm going to think twice about shopping with Office Depot again.

Anyone have any experience similar to this and know if there is anything I can do?

Similar story, but a totally different explanation. I ordered on Monday of last week and
was told delivery would be Weds. Didn't get it Weds. On Thursday I notified them that it didn't arrive and asked for status. Got a reply telling me they were working on the web site to give me access to place an order (even though that was in no way related to what I asked). I e-mailed them again with my original question. I was told they are out of stock and would have to back-order. I questioned that since I was told it was shipping last Monday. I also complained that a backorder would not get me my $50 in rebates. I am now waiting for a call from the warehouse. I suspect that will not resolve it, so I intend to file a complaint with the FTC and BBB for Deceptive Trade Practices. The product was in stock when I ordered. It was in stock when they claimed they were shipping it. Now they change their story. I will push for them to honor the after-rebate price on any order at this point since the rebate period is over.

Best I could pull after complaining to the manager of their call-in support was 10% off my next order. I don't believe there are any restrictions, so I'll just wait until the next good deal from office depot. Still kind of sucks though, since I wanted that Zen.

A 10% off coupon in place of $80 in rebates and coupons doesn't cut it for me. This
product still show up as in stock in certain markets, so there is no excuse for the kind
of deceptive trade practices that OD used here. I filed a complaint with the FTC and BBB about it. The only adequate resolution I could accept at this point is to sell me one at the after-rebate/coupon price since they did everything they could to prevent fulfilling my order while the rebate was still active.

Well, complaining worked for me. Office Depot found one in stock within 15 miles of me
and gave it to me at the same price as was offered during the rebate/sale/coupon period.
That is why I am shocked a the resellerer rating. It isn't that OD doesn't have employees that screw up, but they are smart enough to make it right in the end.

What exactly do you mean upgradeable??? I have a Zen Xtra that the hard disk died on me, and Creative won't replace it. Is there a cheap way to fix it myself? It seems like a longshot, but hey...

Yes, you can open it up, replace the hard drive with a standard laptop hard drive, 2.5" (4200rpm advised) then start in "safe mode" and flash the current bios.

I just ordered a Dell Jukebox, got it for $155 so I figured it would be worth a try.
