Creative X-fi Platinum, hardware detection issues!

I've just upgraded my sound card to the Auzentech X-fi Prelude 7.1. I had the Creative X-fi Platinum before. I ended up giving my Creative X-fi card to my brother-in-law and he replaced it with his old Creative Audigy 2 ZS. When we put in the X-fi card in his PC after removing the old Audigy drivers the installation of the X-fi card seemed fine, sounded all good. Now every now and then when he boots his PC it comes up found new hardware and the sound card isn't detected and it want's to reinstall drivers again. Something we didn't connect is the front I/O panel on the Platinum as it has the mic issue, not having this connected wouldn't cause any problems would it?

he's running win xp pro
abit ic7-max3 socket 478 mb
ran driver cleaner pro pe and driver sweeper in safe mode to remove old drivers.
used original x-fi install cd first then installed the latest crative x-fi drivers (not beta).

I'm betting it's just a driver conflict. Uninstall the software, wipe all of the Creative drivers with Driver Sweeper (in safe mode), and install the latest Creative drivers for the card.

still can't get windows to detect the card even after fresh install of windows. it does show multimedia audio controller under other devices in the device manager.

we haven't got the front platinum panel hooked up to the x-fi sound card. could this be the problem? does the card need power to the x-fi board?
