I'm stupid and haven't heard that it's the same as the plextor. Any website you know of to verify that fact? Seems like a damn good deal if you ask me.

Well I have Plextor at work and the only difference is front label and buffer size. Other than that everything looks the same even firmware version. http://www.fadden.com/cdrfaq/faq05.html#[5-1-26] That is what I found:
CDR2000 (2x2/512K, based on the Ricoh RS1060C)
CDR2224 (24x2x2/2MB;IDE, based on JVC XR-W2080?)
CDR4210 (4x2/1MB, based on the Panasonic CW-7501)
CDR4224 (24x4x2/2MB;IDE, based on a JVC XR-W4080)
CDR?? "CD Studio" (24x4x4/2MB;IDE, based on ??)
CDR6424 (24x6x4/2MB;IDE, based on Ricoh 7060A)
CDR8432 (32x8x4/2MB;IDE, based on Plextor PX-W3284?)

it seems odd to me that they would disable 2 megs of cache for creative. whatever the case may be... still a pretty good price. if i needed a drive, i'd still go for a plextor, sony, or yamaha.

CAUTION !

I have one of the early 8432 and it is the same as plextor(see link above),I just got one for a freinds machine and it is not the same. Device manager id's it as creative RW3245E(not RW8432E) which turns out to be a Samsung drive, not plextor(it says Samsung on the label). can't tell you how good a drive it is, it was DOA. Returned it.

I bought a creative 8432 from staples a few weeks ago and it was a 8435. Best we could tell it was a Samsung. Returned it.

There's a whole thread on it.. from about jul 20 or so.

Well, I just checked my device manager and it says Creative CD-RW RW8432E, unit is made in Japan June 2000. It even came with same shipping black insert as the plextor drive. Just want you to know that it came from Carol Stream, Illinois warehouse. The choice is yours.

I have to agree with stingygrrl, the new 8432 from creativelabs are 8435 - made by samsung, not plextor..

I also ordered one from staples during that other post and got it for $120 (shipped)- but it is a samsung.

On the bright side - its a 8435 by samsung, which has 4 meg cache
On the dark side - its a 8435 by samsung, which is NOT compatible with EasyCD or CDRWin

I've kept mine - because it was a good deal and the software companies should support it at some point....but for now all I can use if Nero (which comes with it) and Fireburner....

"On the dark side - its a 8435 by samsung, which is NOT compatible with EasyCD or CDRWin"

I have no problem using CDRWin with the unit I got (just burned win2000 bootable CD). According to adaptec website this unit is supported also.

my suggestion would be to avoid this risk and the crappy creative nomenclature, not to mention half the buffer, and pay $20-30 more for an actual plextor or sony.

Kjazlaw,

That's exactly what I decided to do-- pay a little more and get the good one, since I'll keep it thru several model generations and/or until it dies.

But I still haven't gotten it bc I heard the SCSI version Plextor 10/12/32 is coming out this month, so I hope that makes the price come down a little on the IDE version.

narciarz,

is your drive a 8432 actually an 8432E or 8435? If you got the 8435 to work with Easy CD or CDRWin...which version??

thanks.

Like I said before in device manager it shows CD-RW RW8432E. If it helps anything also on label there is TLA # 0407 and if I remember corectly that number only comes on Plextor drives. My friend has Imation/Plextor drive with TLA # 0403 and I'll check on Tuesday at work if the real Plextor that we have has a number like this and if it does that means only one thing!

I only can say that if you buy a cdrw, make sure it can do raw writes so if you ever want to back up copy protected software, you'll be able to do it. The Elaborate Bytes website that sells CloneCD explains this and also lists drives that will do this. Even Nero will do raw writes if the drive supports it....

As promised, number on 8432 plextor at work: TLA # 0307 and drives do look exactly the same. I'm 99.99% sure that creative cdrw is made by plextor.

Fuzzy the CDRWin version that I have is 3.18.
