The new architecture has been described as being "very different" and "revolutionary" in comparison to other products currently on the market. It is said to have very high quality output and accuracy, which we speculate could potentially mean support for 64-bit color. Mr. Sim Wong Hoo also described the technology as "screamingly fast" and declared it the world's first single-chip tera-op graphics processor with general purpose programmability. The chip is rated at 170 GFLOPS and consists of 76 million transistors. In response to a question asking about the time-to-market for this new chip to reach the mass-market, Creative replied by saying, "We fully expect to be in the retail market by Christmas of this year."

Personally, this is exciting. 🙂 More competition = better performing products and lower prices 😀

To put these stats into perspective, the GeForce4 Ti4600 has just over 63 million transistors and the Radeon 8500 has just over 60 million transistors.

Sounds good and the competition will be most welcome. I'm not sure 64-bit color is worth getting jumpy about, though. Most monitors can only display 24- to 32-bits of distinct colors and LCDs even less. I suppose it is helpful for internal rendering purposes. Carmack would know.

I reckon we'll only see a Creative branded NV30/R300 killer, eh?

Giving 3D Labs execution in the past, I expect "Christmas 2002" to turn into early fall of 2003.

64 bit color is just like more decimal places. it will still lop it off to 32 bit color for display but you'll get a different color than you would with just 32 bit calculations.

ehrm...and which eg. games should support 64bit color rendering ?

I'd be glad if the games i play (eg. Dark Age of C.) would render 32bit...eg. DAoC doesn't...it has a 16bit 3d engine 🙂 )

I'd be totally fine with a 32bit card.....and much rather would be interested in the other features this card is supposed to have...

Anyway it sounds interesting..looking forward to the specs !!!

ummm... carmack wants doom to calculate at 64 bit color. NOT render at 64, just do the calculations using 64 bits, because when you're applying 8 32 bit textures you can get pretty inaccurate just using 32 bits in your calculations.

daoc doesn't render at 32 bit color!?! and its still killing my gf3?!? i guess its all the polys when theres 100 people on screen.

It is said to have......

I predict ten years from now people won't refer to someone exaggerating as "telling a fish story". They'll say he's telling "an upcoming product story".

If this does pan out i sure hope Creative have the sense to keep their own driver department well away from their new graphics product 😉
