The United States of Amishica sounds pretty good to me. We don't need no stinking science. Who cares how long we live. Us Believers are going to heaven anyway.

I was raised in the Catholic Church and received virtually no scientific teaching on evolution in my youth. Now I am a firm believer in evolution. The best way to convert kids to the opposing view is to force crap down their throats and to subsequently let them learn the truth for themselves later on. When they find what a crock they were taugh at a young age, it makes for great reformists.

Sometimes I wonder if this is all just a dream. I swear it was only 4 years ago when I was reading "Inherit the Wind" and laughing to myself at how silly the Creatonists were and how implausible that theory is in light of all the opposing scientific evidence. The rational thinker in me just fails to see how one could dismiss the overwhelming scientific data that proves otherwise. You see, that is precisely the problem that many of us have with the religious right. If they wanted to believe this in the privacy of their own homes then that's completely fine with me, let them live in their ignorance. But, when you start trying to get schools to not teach evolution and to teach Creationism instead then we have a problem. You accuse us of forcing our secular beliefs down your throat when it is just the opposite.

Yup, the black sheep theory of intellectual development goes a long way in explaining the huge numbers of black sheep running around.

I wonder how many "black sheep" in here were raised in a religious environment?

Reminds me of Hardy's reasoning about mathematics education. He thought the Greek and Latin classics focused education of the day was good for getting kids to rebel against it and learn about mathematics on their own.
