Creating Websites

I want to create a website. What I would like to do is create a message board like this one, only with a focus on video games. Does anyone know the specific type of message board they use for this website? I like how its displayed and the features like polls.

I am currently pursuing a masters degree in computer science, and I will be taking a class in Internet programming next semester, so I hope I can use that to help me create a site.

I am also curious as to how one goes about generating revenue from a website. Is it all from advertisements, assuming you don't require paid subscriptions? Do you need a certain number of hits before you can start attracting companies willing to advertise on your site?

If anyone has experience creating websites or other possible online references to direct me to, it would be greatly appreciated.

Scroll all the way to the bottom... It tells you what kind of board it is right there. I'm sure a google search can start you on your way with the rest... Not to be a total douche, but you could have found this information out for yourself.

This site, like most larger forums, runs vBulletin, a paid-for software package. Minimal programming knowledge is needed to set it up.

Most sites make the entirety of their revenue from advertising (and most of them don't make much). Google Adsense will take pretty much anybody.

Purely web based information services almost never turn up any revenue. Revenue comes from inventive ideas and services on the web page (and it is a hard thing to do). If your webpage is strictly a review site (IG anandtech), I can almost guarantee no revenue for a long time (if ever).

How much money would running a site using vBulletin cost? Do you have to keep paying, or is it just one up-front payment?

I was talking about creating a website on a different forum, and someone recommended using EZbord/Yuku since it is less expensive to do that. My main concern with something like that would be I don't want Ezbord/Yuku to control my website. I want to be in full control of my website.

So most websites don't make that much money from advertising? What I don't understand is how a site like Facebook makes so much money. The only way I see them making money is through advertising, yet that site has made Mark Zuckerberg a billionaire.

I would also like to know how much it would cost to register a web domain URL like www ... .com

Either you are starting your pursuit from kindergarten, or you are a complete moron. Sorry.

There is NO WAY that somebody could be actively pursuing a masters in CS and not be savvy enough to know the answers to your simple questions, or know of a thing called "Google."

This thread needs the "not sure if serious" pic or "wwybywb" comment.

Way to treat the new people. If this is the treatment we bestow on the new members
no one will be back. If you have nothing good to say about an honest question, stay out of the thread.

^Sorry 'bout that. I am used to bantering and jesting that we do over in off topic, not called for here. I would delete that post but it serves as a good warning to others... and I would get into trouble for editing it.

You don't need to pay for a forum if you don't want to, there are some very good open source (free) options available to you. I like to try them out over at http://php.opensourcecms.com/.

Purchasing a domain name should cost under $10/year and gets cheaper, per year, if you purchase it for more than one year at check-out. http://www.godaddy.com/ or http://www.namecheap.com/ are good places to check on domain name availability and prices. (It's a good idea to google for discount codes because there are almost always a few out there that will get you a little off.)

Hosts are really varied in their offerings and prices. Personally, I have seven sites hosted on my single account that runs me $35/year and I can add as many as I want until I run out of bandwidth. It is as close to a reseller account as you can get without the billing. Do a search on here for webhosting and you should find as much information as you need.

Sorry again about the rough welcoming, I honestly thought you were somebody else with a duplicate account. 🙁

there are many open source bulletin packages that offered with certain providers.... i have domains registered with dreamhost and have the option to start bb's... phpBB is one of the big ones
