creating RAID0 array..

i just bought a new 80gb WD SATA drive, identical to the one i have in my system right now, and i would like to add it in to create a RAID0 array. what would this entail as far as prepping the new drive for raid0? do i need to put an image of the existing drive onto the new one?

Basically you will need to make a back up of your original drive. When you set up the raid array, you'll format the new array and your drive will be wiped. You start over from scratch.

hmmm....alright, so i'll reformat an old IDE i have, backup onto it, then create the array and restore data.

OK i have another question....if i stick that IDE in after i format it, can i just copy my existing hdd right onto it? what will happen as far as the OS and apps go?

I used this software to copy OS installs for a school one time, it has a free 30 day full version trial ( as long as you don't copy partitions, just data ): http://www.fssdev.com/products/casperxp/

just copy your current hard drive to your IDE backup ( make sure your windows install boots after you do this ), make the Raid, and then copy the data back from the IDE hard drive to your Raid Array.

that looks like it wil work perfectly...although it states that there is a stipulation with the trail, in that it does not provide partition resizing. so...i'm going to copy the 17GB of data on my 80GB wd to the 20GB IDE, then make the raid array, then copy the 17GB of data back onto the 2 80GB WD's in RAID0. thats alot to wrap my brain around...how will the trail limitation effect me?

Actually that wouldn't work for you, I forgot the drives had to be the same size. I think it would be best for a fresh start when you do this anyways. I'm not that good with software.. I remember Xcopy not working, as well as Maxtor's Max Blast program not loading in XP for me? ( might try that one though ). You simply couldn't copy/paste because of various sytem files and things like that.
