OK. I thought this would be easy. It probably is but I'm just computer illiterate, I suppose.
ALl I want to do is take a MS Word doc and convert it to PDF format. I'm running MS Office XP and Acrobat 5.0 I've tried following along what seems like simple instructions but it just ain't happening.
I also want to take an existing PDF file and edit it. Any gurus out there to show me the light.....
Thank you.

Well, if you have the full acrobat, and not just the reader, you should get a button in MS Word to create PDFs, and also a "distiller" printer that you can print to which produces PDFs. Since I'm cheap, I print to a file, call it "foo.ps", then use ghostscript to convert the PS file to a PDF.

CutePDF will do this for free.

EDIT: It will convert a MS Word doc to a read-only PDF for free. For editing PDFs you'll need Acrobat.

I like OpenOffice.

I use linux, so the Windows may be slightly different, but I dont' think so.

Along with the other little buttons across the top (spell check, indent left, indent right, etc etc.) it has "export directly as PDF" button.

For a long time I thought PDF's were stupid, just bloated and you couldn't copy-paste text like a normal word proccessor document. But I realise that they are nice for doing technical documents and presentations. Everybody can use them, they carry the fonts built in, and you don't have to worry about any reformatting issues. Good stuff.

That's what I thought. I do have the full version and the distiller. When I read the Help files it says the Acrobat button should be evident if I open the MS Word doc. But, I don't see no stinkin' button! ??

Turns out I was running Acrobat version 5.0.1 However, to run with Office XP requires an update to 5.0.5
Once I did that the buttons magically appeared. This thread is offically in the Dirt Nap Pile. Thanks.
