As the title says, I'm going through my house room by room and creating a layout of the electrical circuits.

Right now, it's all going into a 1 subject notebook. I want to create a more professional looking document for future reference.

Has anyone done this? Or know a good program to try?

I'm on Ubuntu 12.04

There is free and very good tool for creating electrical schematics and drawings called profiCAD, can be used for drawing building circuitry or PCB and device circuitry.
Unfortunately it works only on windows.

You can get it here

Thanks guys. I could always use my wife's laptop if windows is required. I'll check out both programs recommended.

Check out Sweet Home 3D. In addition to Dia, it may work well, for laying out the house levels.

Only had enough time to start the first room in the notepad, done with Dia:

Thanks again for the input.

Heh, I thought you were going into a bit of detail with the circuits. However, that works for your needs then it doesn't matter. :)

on going project. the basement is mostly finished with drywall ceilings (hate it), want drop ceilings. It makes circuit tracing for a novice like me cumbersome. At this point, figuring out what breakers do what, and documented.

In the future, it will probably get more detailed. I would like to know how the circuits are actually laid out.
