Creating "blog" for students to access through AnandTech

I am a teacher at Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, SC. I want my IT students to actively research, respond, and create content online about what we are learning about in class. Is there a way to create a closed forum for my class through this site and allow them access to the rest of the site as users? This is one of the few forum/blog-like sites that can be accessed through BESS, our networked security program.

There's another site out there, tek-tips.com, that I know allows private forums for a small fee. But wherever you go, here, there, somewhere else, discussion in the public forums for student related questions is typically frowned upon, as it really does get it the way for discussions on actual work related issues the members have.

Creating your own forum is incredibly easy... my wife managed to do it by herself, and she's far from a techie.

Steps:
1. Register a domain name.
www.wandohighblog.com or some such available name..
2. Find a host. Many hosts offer a ton of packages with their hosting.
3.

WAIT a second... you teach IT?!

Relax, sheesh.

OP, just as your highschool's tech people about setting up a forum for the students. Chances are if they have a website they can set something up for you to use in 30min.

Yes there is but it won't be on the AnandTech forums.

Since this is for educational purposes I can help you do it for FREE including domain and software installation. The forum would be private and even password protected.

Please send me a private message with your contact name and phone number or e-mail address.

My old high school uses BESS. I created an invisisonfree forum and me and about 20 kids at school used it to chat for almost 2 years.

Best bet is to ask them regarding that at moderator@anandtech.com directly to see if they like your suggestion for the site. More likely, your suggestion here may probably get overlooked.

No donation necessary but thank you. Your heart is in the right place

Unfortunately raeellen hasn't contacted me yet. If/when they do I'll be more than happy to help.

I think Rossman's offer is AWESOME!

That said, if Anand knew about this request, I wouldn't be surprised if he wouldn't find a way to do it. It could be a multi-fold good for many. He started AnandTech as a Junior High student, and worked hard right through High School. If he were to investigate this situation and perhaps create something to help do just what raeellen asked, he could, put ads in there, it would increase the number of total registered users, and if he restricted the blogs to educational institutions, he might even be able to get a tax write off.

Just a thought.

It is a good thought; and Rossman's offer was wonderful. But, it seems that every school I'm familiar with has their own server. Plus,
This is one of the few forum/blog-like sites that can be accessed through BESS, our networked security program.
I'd bet that's something that will end, eventually. Schools are getting stricter and stricter about blocking online forums. I had two blocked and had to beg to get one of them unblocked (sorry, it wasn't this forum; it was one specifically for math and physics). I love Raeellen's idea for her students. But, it seems that an IT teacher should be somewhat familiar about setting up such a site. Then again, on second thought, especially after re-thinking my initial post in this thread which I felt made me look like a jerk, I realized that some teachers end up teaching a class on occasion that are slightly out of their area of expertise. Nonetheless, it helped me in the decision to create a forum for my own students, so I can torture them and force them to use LaTeX and type math online. :) (Hey, I won't let them use graphing calculators in calculus; I've gotta bring technology into the course somewhere.)
