Creating a Personal Server Box

I would like to make a server type rig to organize all my media more efficiently. I've never done this before or really looked into it and such so i got a couple questions.

I want to have it store my music/movies and such and I want to be able to access it quickly to play them on my main computer and also be able to serve them across the internet. What type of processor power do i need to do these things?

are there other things which i am overlooking or anything like that also?

Just to serve it out to yourself, not much at all. Some cheap box will do. The data rate is limited at the network interface, unless it is a really old box.

To serve it out to the public, it really depends on what volume you want to support.
