Ok.. i'm creating a new phat ass system for my dorm...

What i have so far:
*Aluminum Case $90
*WD 120GIG 8mb cache $142 thanks for Dell's pricing error
*Yamaha TSS-1 6speaker set $100
*Microsoft Natural Pro Keyboard $14 at Fry's!!!
*2 sticks of Crucial DDR PC2100 256 Ram =512mb $105

What I need:
*MOBO (ASUS something.. dont' know which model.. help me out on this one.)
*CHIPSET (INtel something... perhaps P41.8A Ghz and overclock this baby to a 2.2ghz or so??)
*DVD drive (?? dont' know jack about DVD drives... thinking about getting a Liteon or toshiba from newegg.com.. let me know)
*Sound Card (Turtle Beach Santa Cruz?? I think this would go nicely along with my Yamah TSS-1 Speaker system)
*Monitor (thinking about a regular CRT?? LCD too expensive.)
*Burner (thinking about getting a lite-on 32x for $50.00)
*Video Card (80% sure i'm getting ATI All in wonder Pro 8500DV 64mb Ram, perfect for Video editing.. :) )

So what do you guys think??? I really need help with the mobo though... If you guys could be ever-so-kind to suggest me a good mobo... nothing too extravagant or anything... Just something really good for the $$$... ;-)
Any other suggestions would be EXCEL-Ent... ;-)

Thank you!

How much money do you have for your Mobo/CPU?

That will determine whether you're going AMD or Intel and what Chipset you want to use. You're mentioning video editing? Is that your primary use?:)

awh how foolish of me... Heh..I want INTEL for sure and i want it to be a ASUS MOBO, but not sure which specific model...

I want it to be th P4 1.8Aghz edition so i can overclock it... Or maybe not, depending on the cheapest way i can get the most out of this system...

Any ideas on what else i need??? Help a brother out! :)

guess i'm willing to dish out a total of $900~$1000 for EVERYTHING, which includes what i bought already... :p

I think i narrowed down my DVD player.. I want the Pioneer Slot Loading DVD Player, the 106s/2 edition from newegg.com... Heard pretty good reviews.. If not that one, what about the Toshiba DVD player from newegg.com ???

I'm lost..

the only problem so far that i see is your memory! it might not overclock well? causing you to not be able to oc ur cpu. or you could always use a 1:1 divider

I got a Abit IT7-Max board stable as a diamond, and 1.8a at 2.8

900nf or 700nf monitor(9=19in, 7=17in)
get a GF4 ti 4200(gainward makes sweet cards)
Santa Cruz or Audigy are ecellent, Hercules Game theatre XP is a sweet one too

Yes...Samsung pc2700 can be had for same price or less then the crucial pc2100....

First off think bigger!!! 2.4ghz should be more of an average with the newer 1.8a's...So 133fsb with a standrad 3:4 RATIO of an i845e mobo and you are running 354mhz ddr and the sammy should handle that fine...

asus p4b533e or p4b533-v models are the best intel chipset by asus....Yuo definitely want a board that can lock down pci/agp buses or if you don't make it to 133fsb for some strange reason you could find stability hard past 116-120fsb and that would extremely limit the oc and make your ram useless...

I don't see why you're limiting your motherboard manufacturer selection to ASUS only... There are many other competenet manufacturers out there that can produce and equally quality board for less money. However, ASUS does make good motherboards. ASUS' i845G (P4B-533) board is excellent. The i845G is a good mix of performance and price. Also, go with PC2700 memory. The extra added memory performance makes a signficant difference with P4 processors. I have a Toshiba DVD-16x drive. I love it. It is quieit, fast, and has excellent seek time. The Pioneer 16x slot load is damned cool, but I think it is louder and slightly slower on spinup/seek time. A friend of mine has one and from his experience when using mine that is what he has said. Of course, he likes the slot load ability more and doesn't really care. It depends what is important to you. The sound card is one of the more complicated pieces of hardware to recommend because it has a lot to do with personal preference. The Audigy and Acoustic Edge are supposed to have the best of the positional audio implimentations. However, the Santa Cruz is supposed to have very high-fidelity music playback. It depends which is important to you. I have the Acoustic Edge and wouldn't trade it for anything. Go with a nice 19" CRT. 19" CRT's go for very reasonable prices now, even fairly high quality ones. Samsung makes excellent monitors for fairly low prices. I also like NEC; NEC monitors have many of the same quality parts as Mitsubishi monitors with cheaper circuitry (Therefore lower refresh rates). Lite-On makes excellent burners at the lowest prices in town. I see no reason to go with any other manufacturer. The video card is another area where it really depends on personal preference. For pure speed in gaming the GeForce4/Radeon9700 are both very competitive. If you want to get into video editing as you mentioned, the AIW 8500DV is an excellent choice. The AIW 7500 is also an excellent choice if you don't need the higher gaming performance of the 8500. I also find that the Radeon 8500/8500LE makes for an excellent buy in terms of the price/performance ratio. I can play all the latest games with mine, and at pretty good framerates. I love the low performance hit implimentation of Anisotropic filtering as well. The image quality is also top-notch. I hope I have been some help. Good luck!

Thats $451. That leaves you with only 549 to cover a lot of bases.

Motherboard - Asus P4B533 = $145.00
CPU - P4 1.8a (Suspected price cut Sep 1st) = 143.00
DVD drive - Do you really need a dvd drive? They are pretty overrated for pcs in my opinion. I cant stand
to watch movies on my PC, and for a little more than the price of a pc dvd drive, you can get one for your tv.
Sound Card - Onboard sound w/ the P4B533
Monitor - Size? For 19 inches, samsung makes a good entry level monitor, the 955DF. You can get it for around $200.00.
Burner If you can find the lite-on 32x for 50, go for it.
Video Card I dont know anything about video editing, but for gaming, a nice, cheap card is the Geforce 4 Ti4200. It will run you
about 125 dollars.

That totals $663.00 for the MB, CPU, Monitor, Burner, and Video Card. Keep in mind thats w/o a sound card and dvd drive. The onboard
sound for the P4B533 is very good, so you really dont need a sound card. You should also pick up some Arctic Silver 3 if you plan to overclock. Thats about 5 bucks. The total w/ the components you've already purchased and the AS3 is $1119.00. I didnt factor in shipping or any sales tax you might have to pay.

So what do you guys think??? I really need help with the mobo though... If you guys could be ever-so-kind to suggest me a good mobo... nothing too extravagant or anything... Just something really good for the $$$... ;-)

If your budget is more important than the performance of your system, I would suggest building an AMD system instead. You can save a few hundred bucks that way. I have an Intel system, so I cant give you any advice on which AMD based components you should get, sorry.

A few Hundred? If he got a 1800+ he could save about $75-$150 depending on what motherboard he chose.

Hmm.. Thank you very much for your feedback.. Much appreciated.

My soundcard has run into a problem with my spekaer system.

I have the Yamaha tss-1 6 speaker system. It has an optical input... i tried plugging it into my TURTLE BEACH SANTA CRuz but i it seems i can't plug it into the VERSA JACK on it. I don't understand why this isn't working?? anyone know why?

Turtle beach claims it will support optical input and all, but i can't seem to plug it in... :-( My soundcard didn't come with any adapters or anything either.. if there is any???
