Creating a home network to share files

Hi, I've done a search and haven't found anything.
I have tried a few things to solve this problem such as enable netBios but it hasn't helped.

My problem is that i just got a laptop and wish to share files between my laptop and my desktop. My laptop connects wireless, while my desktop is connected with wires to my d-link 514 router.
I have tried putting the same name for the workgroup, and tried going to network neighbourhood and clicking 'view workgroup computers' it says (from both the desktop and laptop)

"Home is not accessible. You may not have the permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

The only interesting part is that i can ping the desktop from my laptop, but i can't ping the laptop from the desktop.

How can i make this work.

Thanks a lot.

My Computer > Tools > Folder Options... > View and uncheck Use Simple File Sharing (it should be the last box in the scroll down menu.)

does your laptop have a firewall like windows xp's firewall stopping the pings, etc.? after you have the permissions correct on the share, etc. you can access it properly, but neither pc sees each other, your windows firewall on the laptop seems to stop the ping from the desktop, just disable firewalls on both. if you start->run->type \\ipaddress of the computer you want to access, you can see the shares then of that pc. if you still cant access the other pc even that way once pinging both ways is good, something else can be going on.
