Have you tried capturing video other than from your VCR? It may help if you try some simple captures from another source (for instance the AIW's tuner) so that you can get a feel for the workflow of the various applications you are using.

Try doing small captures off the tuner with MMC at different settings/codecs. Then try using VirtualDub to capture, or encode some of your other captures.

i don't know what Macrovision copy protection is
its a method used to keep you from copying copywritten source material.

yeah, i've tried other sources before. For some reason, transferring from an analog source media such as a vhs tape to digital data just causes this weird blur across the screen like the tracking is off...

Well, unless you have a firewire card as well, ALL of your captures are from an analog source as your capture card is an analog device. Describe your problem in better detail.
Macrovision generally will give you 2 types of capture problems:
Flashing from light to dark, or Video stops and sound continues, what you're describing doesn't exactly fit either. Have you researched the sites given, VCDhelp and Doom9? Both those sites have a wealth of information concerning PC Video.

thanks for that nic, but I already downloaded it. I just haven't had enough time yet to install and test it. I am interested to know where to find the two video editing programs you referred to

Why are you bumping this thread? You can go to google to do a search for the programs that you wanted links for. While you're there, if you do a search for "nanny's" you might find someone to hold your hand while you do it too.

I looked on google and found links to the product descriptions for both vegas video and video factory, but not for demo downloads. Anyone know if there are any and where I can find them?
