creating a distributed computing article..

dawks

Diamond Member
Hey everyone, I used to be a bigger participant in the area of the forums back when AT was big in RC-5, but I sort of got bored of it for three reasons, the first, Georgia vs. McOwen (that really sour'ed me), then there was the terrible and overbearing moderation here, and lastly, my access to noticable computer power was very limited. (I still keep my systems chuggin, but thats about it)..

Anyway, enough background. I've always been big into the idea of distributed computing, and the idea that so many computers are not being utilized to their full potential always tweaks me 😀 So I figured I would flex my knowlege and utilize my free time by creating an article that starts at the basics of Distributed Computing, and work its way forward. What I would also like to do is provide a very complete list of the projects running, such as SETI@Home, ORG-25, Folding@home and so on. Also with this list, I would like to provide more details about each individual project, like what they look at, what are the benefits of that, so on and so fourth (something like a page long or longer article). Since I am not knowlegable enough on each individual project, I was wondering if there are some that would like to chip in their intelligence. ie. If your very active in a particular project and would like to write an article to be included, that would be great!

I'd also like a few people who are very knowlegable to proof read my 'final' product. I hate distributing false information 😀.

Post in here if your interested! and call your topic so we dont have two people doing the same thing (or you and another can collaborate).

If this has already been done somewhere else, great, provide a link so I can have a peek, but I still wanna make my own! Thanks! 😀 😀

(this is not a school, or work assignment. this is just for fun)

Hi Daz, I've ran from the joint too, for all those reasons and more, but I still will lurk here and there. I'll offer my proofreading and writing skills to give you a hand in promoting the team 🙂 good to see you, glad your active 😀 I've done Folding, Seti, and Distributed.net (tho I rather not do those folks section.) so wherever you most need me, I'll be availible.

I think a good place to start is right here: HERE

😀

Gives a great short summary of each project with links for more information. 🙂

I think you will find a good source of information here.

It gives information on just about every DC project out there.

Hey, nice idea !

I would be really interested in reading such artice, and, if you allow, in tries to translate it into polish - there is, in fact, no polish webpage about DC! Last artice about DC in polish I read was about 3-4 years ago 🙁 I want to change the trend...

Hey D347h that's a great idea for a Polish language translation! (I then looked at your profile and saw where you hail from!) I too would be interested in reading your article DaZ and can host it and any translations as well. Good luck and PM me with any thing I can help with. I run SETI and DPAD, though there are MUCH better sources of info on those projects than me.

Hey, maybe DaZ you will like my idea..
You create basic article in enlish, then we put it on website and allow geeks from all over the world translate it into their native languages.. Running such www.WhatIsDC.com - what you think ?

Sounds like some good ideas! My article so far is very simple, starting right from the basics..

I picture it being used something like this:
Geek: Hey you should run A DC Project on your system...
Regular Joe: Whats a DC Project?
Geek: Read this article (rather then me spending 20 minutes explaining it to you)

😀

I like the idea of providing translations. I'll keep working on it. I have a little over a page of text right now.. shouldnt be too much longer, until I add contributions from others.

Still need people to do dedicated sections on certain projects. LMK! 😀
