Create a new image at what point in the install process?

I'm about to scrap the partitions I've got setup (98/2k/XP) and go with XP and at least one other OS, including a newbie-ish flavor of linux. (It's about damn time!)

For the first time, I'm going to actually create a disk/ghost image of my install. I figure that way I'll be much more apt to do a fresh install if and when things get kinda hairy instead of fussing about with things.

I don't dread installing software, so the extra time wouldn't kill me, but any thoughts on what sort of essentials should be there?

OS (XP Pro), Office, Opera, NAV... any others?

Depends on what you consider essential and wouldn't want to waste time reinstalling or what you might think that you upgrade/reinstall often enough that it might not be worth it.

Before you add graphics drivers, since changing cards is always a gamble with older drivers installed.

Ah, great point.

Going over my list of programs/devices/etc. At the very least I can include some basics (drivers, universal utilities, etc) with the image.

Gathering every bit of user name / password / parameters / settings / etc right now.
