Crazy Voltages?

Check out this thread over at XS.

Now, I think this is kind of crazy, but they are saying to use what ever voltages are nessasary to obtain an OC and then use that crazy high voltage in your 24/7 OC as long as you don't break 60C.

Were talking 1.8v on 24/7 OC.

Thought? Good or bad? Should I try it?

Wouldn't run 24/7 under LN2, way too loud ;)

If you run water, never ever run above 1.65v on a single core chip, 1.55v on a dualie.
My words of wisdom.

I wouldn't run over 1.6v even for testing. Rule of thumb is .2?( not good with decimals) over default, so if the chip defaults to 1.35v/1.40v, 1.60 is the max in my book.

The "Max" is whatever you can sustain without instability, or overheating.

I have seen a few 146's run solid for months on end 24/7 at 1.65v. When returned to more reasonable voltags they ran fine. I have also seen 165's run at 1.8v for torture testing for thre days of hell without a hitch; they also still ran fine at default voltages.

The point is that the maximum voltage is when the CPU dies. Anything other than that is not "Max". As far as safe? Has anyone done a comprehensive lifespan chart versus voltage for ANY CPU of andy manufacturer?? NO!!

Therefore, you are on your own as far as "Maximum safe" voltage. Any use of the CPU shortens it's lifespan, and the second that it is booted it is dying. Default voltage is killing he CPU, but slower than at 1.8v would. Will it live forever at default?? No... How long will it live at 1.6v?? Likely longer than you'd want the CPU to be in your rig. Who still uses a Pentium III for anything outside of internet browsing or in the office. It is worthless for most anything else where time means anything to you.

That being said, what the OP should have asked is "How long will my CPU live with elevated voltages?" Of course the answer is likely to be a question......

Pretty wise words. To bad there are a lot of unwise people around. They are a little higher than what I would recomend but it depends on the situation. Normally you dont get much from that last .5 volt but if you do then it might be worth the risk.

I have seen many CPUs run at 1.6, and rarely have I seen them break. The ones that do are the rare ones that are bad anyway, in my estimation. So 1.6 is fine for 24/7, though I would be careful of 1.8. Like real careful. But it does not make a cent of difference about the cooling, the temps are what matter. Stay under 60C, that will be fine.

I hope you havent gave to many people that advice. The damage done by voltage is exponetial for every increase while temperature is linear.

VOLTAGE DOES MATTER.

So if you had to take a guess, what would be the lifespan of an Opteron 165 @ 1.5v+

Thats the thing. Each processor is different. One may make 1 year while another goes for 12. Engineers have been quoted as saying chips are developed for a 10 year life. I would gues that at 1.5 your cutting that in half. Remmeber we are talking averages. If you had a processor that was only going to make it 6 years then you are looking at 3 while a processor that would go 14 would get 7. Just estimates though. And that just from voltage. If you start to take heat into account then its going to shorten even more. Then oops some static discharge...just lost some more time. lol you get the point.

Rule of thumb is 10-15%. With older chips adding .2 would be fine as it would fall right in there safe amount.

Those guys must go through a new chip at least once a year and maybe once a month. I honestly think most of them are full of sh!t.

Well, as long as AMD keeps selling the Opterons I guess I can just buy I new one when my chip dies in ~5 years :p

If they still make them. (or if my chip even lasts that long)
