Crazy slow wifi

I dabble in tech (routers, modem upgrades, extenders, etc) and have come across a baffling situation:

Used or nearly new wireless routers, with basic simple configuration (SSID & WPA2 security) that are WAY slow.

Linksys, Belkin, and Netgear alike, and now my friend has same symptoms.

Here's a typical scenario: 30meg service from the modem. And then 0.6-1.5 meg out of the router. So my training tells me to reset & try again. Same.

From experience I'd like to swap my equipment with my friend, and we try each others routers on our own modems with our own cables. But I continue to find this very odd. Anyone else seen this?

Its wireless, so it could be 10000000 different things causing it.

The big three to check first would be interference, range, and the wireless cards on the PCs.

Which wireless are we talking? G/N/AC? What band? 2.4ghz or 5hz? Distance apart? How many other SSID are in your area? What brands are you using?

RadiclDreamer-

I'm talking N and 2.4 and low density wifi. Distance apart? From what? The modem is 3' away, the average client distance is 12-15'

Brands are Netgear - Belkin - Linksys.

Does this help? Meanwhile I'll have him check (disconnect) the cordless phone, that he probably doesn't even own :)

If wired is also having the problem, I would look into a speed/duplex mismatch or a connection that is negotiating at 10mb
