Silent Hunter series has lots of options for realism. If you turn most or all of them to auto, then it's mostly a point and click adventure with torpedoes.

If you keep them all on full realism, then you are essentially doing all the tasks of an entire sub crew (radar operator, sonar operator, weapons officer etc.) Be prepared to id enemy ships via outlines etc. That was a bit too much for me. If I was into that, I would have gone to Annapolis.

No matter what, an enjoyment of trigonometry and euclidean construction is a must as you will be spending the majority of your time plotting interception courses etc. Getting a kill can be very rewarding though.

I can comment on SH3.

It's considered by the subsim community to be the framework for the best, most realistic sub simulation ever. However, the stock game is only decent - to get the most out of it you'll need to download GWX, which is a HUGE HUGE ongoing modification that's taken years. It has its own bajillion page manual...

Unfortunately stock SH3 shipped with numerous bugs and hardcoded problems that can't be changed. In 20 years of gaming, this game required the most gameplay and "invisible bug" research, modding, graphics card control panel changes, and general file tinkering.

Still, it was incredibly satisfying, and I highly recommend it - but only if you plan to download the GWX mod, and perhaps OneLifeCrisis' mods (graphics, GUI, etc). Also, it is imperative that you download JSGME, which should be used as your launcher for SH3. It's a mod manager and basic gameplay editor. Very, very important. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=141773

Oh, and the forums at subsim.com are indispensible. MUST check them out, especially the mod sections. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/index.php

If you pick it up and want a hand with basic tips for setting up the game, send me a PM.

L4D starting to look reasonable.

$37.50 is still too much for it imo. I preloaded it and got it for $45 and I don't think it's worth $37.50. I hardly play it at all.

man, its such a fun game...you guys are crazy.

Truth.

I hear these complaints from people who don't do well in a cooperative environment. Some people want their shooters to be rambo...

And yeah, if you're not working your friends list for this game, you're doing it wrong. Get good teammates, get a mic, and you'll have a blast.

Well I don't consistenly have everyone on my friends list playing L4D and when you don't it sucks. There's just not enough content to warrant the price. It got boring very quickly. I'll pop it in once a day and play a round of versus and that's it. They need some more content. 2 maps to play on with the same weapons over and over gets boring.

its a valve game, there will be more content soon...hopefully you will still be interested in the game at that time.

I'm a Valve nut so I'm keeping up to date with the various user mods for L4D. Everyone is excited about the Dead Before Dawn maps. They look awesome. Can't wait for those to come out.

Wait wait WAIT I just got L4D for christams from my kids. HAVING a blast.
Me him and 2 of his friends.. TOTALLY AWESOME.

What is this new maps thing you speak of? PLEASE do tell.

Man, you gotta love some of the Elitist attitudes here.

I have played MULTIPLE games with Randos... It still rocks...
It must be NICE to have you and 3 of your friends who are all SEALS or Green Berets, and tear through a map in record time and unlock every accomplishment in 4 rounds or less. More power to ya. Cripes people... LOOSEN up. Its a GAME. Frustrating.. SURE at times. Brief fleeting moments. But the randomness adds a spice IMO. Even more so with voice chat.
We (Sons and his friends) own one map, fairly well, Dead Air I think... Played that map with a group of Randos... Picked up some new tips. Hell at the end I was REALLY the "Brains" of the group. Before triggering the FINAL event, I made sure I had one grenade left. I was playing with 14 year olds (Estimate) it was cool. They twitched better, I was wiser :D... I said when the doors open just RUN to the plane; gun butting everything in your way. When we got there, I threw my grenade and all the zombies said.. "Look shiny thing"... First time the sever admin got "No one left behind achievement" on that map. It was pretty cool. Would he have gotten it eventually. Sure.
It is kinda fun to be dropped randomly in a situation with unknowns. I will make no claims to greatness. In fact, I will admit I suck at FPS twitch games. So far, I guess I have been very lucky to run into randos who want to play and have fun and not judge the value on how fast we tear through a map....
We now return you to your regular programing.

Bought Unreal Tournament 3 for $10. Not a bad deal. Hopefully people are actually playing it...

I've been debating whether or not I should pick up the Unreal Deal Pack.

Its 20 bucks for Unreal Gold, Unreal 2, UT 2004, UT Gold, and UT3. I have the original Unreal, and the original UT. I had UT 2003, but my disks are shot.

I was only moderately interested in Bioshock, but since it still has the securom with limited activations, thats black listed. Even at 5 dollars, I still cannot bring myself to rent a game under false pretenses.

i thought they took all that nonsense out of bioshock.

There's still a blurb on the Steam Bioshock page about it requiring online activation, so there's still some form of securom in it. Games that use the normal Steam authentication don't have such a notice.

Wish Impulse would have sales like this, Steam is probably selling games right and left from this.

That's still the Steam DRM. They have more than one option for publishers when it comes to DRM, like they can require that it is authenticated online at certain intervals.

EDIT: To clarify, I have BioShock, Fallout 3, and a myriad of other Steam games. Steam has not installed SecuROM and the only registry entry I have that contains the word SecuROM is a flag for BioShock that contains the product key. I do not have the SecuROM registry entries for the software itself. As far as I can tell, they are still using the Steam DRM which can be fined tuned to the publisher. Sometimes the publisher can require only a single activation (like they have with Half-Life 2) or they can require periodic activations (like with BioShock and Fallout 3). I do not always have internet connection but I have never been inconvenienced by this. The product activations for Fallout 3 and Bioshock look like the same to me.
Hmm, I think I can confirm this. Recently bought and downloaded BioShock through Steam and doesn't look to have installed anything related to SecuROM (I don't even have any registry entries). Started up and played BioShock for about half a hour and doesn't look like it installed anything nefarious, just a DirectX update.

But Wikipedia and other sources suggest the Steam version does have SecuROM protection, so I don't know. Maybe it did initially, but 2K decided to stop distributing it with the Steam download.

Or maybe they hide it better with more recent versions, I only searched my PC and registry for the string "SecuROM". They may have changed something so that it isn't so obvious that the software is installed.
