What makes me mad is the fact that its the children and the women who end up suffering the most....
I don't know why society still thinks women and children are more important than men.

Further, more men are dying in this conflict than women or children, since it's mainly men (or stupid young teenage boys) grabbing a gun and trying to fight the marines.
Because of your last sentence, I think society feels women and children are "innocent".
Could be. I know I can't recall any images of men up in arms against he US while their wives and kids were carrying billboards saying "Thanks, America! We apologize on behalf of our hubbies!"
It is easy to talk when we are living in our comfortable home & driving fancy cars.

I personally have experienced what the Iraqis are experiencing right at the moment (Vietnam), and the images are disturbing & sadden me as of how cruel the world can be to civilians. And, I still have nightmares of what I have seen 30 years ago.

In a war there is no such thing as winner (or civilian), because everyone loses.

[Edit] According to the US, there were about 350,000 civilian death (but many belive that it could be much more than 1/2 millions civilian death) during the Vietnam war which is about equal to 1/4 of the total armies lost. And most of the civilian death were children. There must be a much larger number of civilian wounded durring the war. And, that isn't factor in the lost from unexploded mines/bombs from 1975 to now (there weren't a clean up program un till the US withdraw the embargo in 1992). Also, after the war there were about 1/2 million South Viet childrens that were orphan by the result of the "Viet Nam Conflict" (don't know the number for North).

Assuming that similar civilian damage percentage in Iraq as compare to Vietnam.
I know, I'm just saying that I see nothing inherently more special about a woman's death than a man's.

Its a pitty that its been reported that the iraq fighters are using women and children as shields.

bad part is you can't have a war without civilian casualties. just look at the damage in WWII with the carpet bombing.

War is horrible people. I can't believe people didn't actually expect to see things like that. If anyone has ever been in a hospital emergency room in a major city for a night, multiply that by 10 and increase the average severity of the wounds with lots of burns etc. by 10 and maybe you can come close to a few hours of all out combat.
If more people were aware of that fact, it would like give us pause and more restraint. Most violent movies don't even illustrate the results of violence very well. Seeing a half-rotten body on the street with bits torn off it, just haphazardly lying there is more impressionable than a fabricated movie will be to somebody, which is the only violence a lot of people are exposed to.

American's view violence as sacrifice... it's a thing of honor and pride.
