This morning on my way up to my office I do as I do every morning - I run up 8 flights of stairs to get a bit of exercise instead of taking the elevator. About floor 4 there was old janitor dude sweeping the stairs, and as I came by he started talking to me. It came upon me that sometimes the most random people have the most bazaar, incredible, or wonderful information that could really change your life.

He told me that he has worked in goverment for 20 years, and was fired from his old job. It went about like this...

"I used to work over with the po-lice, an' I'd drink every mornin' all the time. I'd seem them po-lice coming and I'd go into the closet, 'cause if they came near me I knew they could smell it and that's not good. After I got fired from there I went to work again, but one Sunday morning I woke up and said to myself that I wasn't gonna drink no more. Now I aint had a drink in 4 years, and I've had my job and aint plannin' on losin' it this time. Now you might think it's hard not drinkin', and if I bought a fifth I'd drink it all, but I aint gonna buy a fifth cause I'm too old to be drinkin' and goin' through that again. They used to say to me that I needed help, that I needed them to get me off the booze, but it don't take nobody else. They aint gonna stop you from drinkin' from the bottle, only you can do that. It's all in your mind, it's all from yourself. It's you and aint nobody else that decides if you're gonna do anythin' or do nothin'."

Now that last part if what really made me think, here's this old dude just happy to have a job and having been through some damn tough times, and he's got better information to give than my boss ever has.

Ever known any crazy old dudes that gave you some great story?

I think most Grandfathers/GreatGrandfathers fall into that category. Most probably aren't crazy in any real sense, but most will do things that are considered 'weird' by today's standards.

My Grandfather was so full of great stories (99% true) about the depression, WWII, life in general, travel (was in every state at least twice by the time he was 40), and family. I could (and did) sit and listen to him for hours on end. Old people are such a great resource for younger people. It's too bad that they get labeled 'crazy old dudes' :)

"It's you and aint nobody else that decides if you're gonna do anythin' or do nothin'."

Exact same thing I hear from people who have successfully quit smoking. Same with getting off the dole, or expecting the government or union to find you a job, and keep you working no matter what. Personal responsibility? Maybe it's becoming fashionable again!
