Eh, all goths are wannabes. Then again so is everyone else. No humans are genuine, and the fact that some people dress in black to be 'different' cracks me up.

But hey, everyone is entitled to be who or what they want, as long as they conform to some basic societal rules.

I had the same initial perception of goths/punks as you guys - that was when I was an IDIOT WITH MY HEAD UP MY ASS. I've gotten to know some of them (well, maybe 2) personally and they are not what you make them out to be. most of them are quite smart - in fact, this gothic or punk-like (not sure what the difference is) girl has a much higher gpa than me...and I'm a comp nerd. most of the ppl like her seem to have a better grasp of reality than most. of course, not all of them are great either...I do sort of detest this one annoying bastard..but that's a singular and seperate situation. before you guys judge, get to know the person. after all, don't you just hate it when preps and jocks snicker behind your back at how you spend your whole day behing the comp and then give you an atomic wedgie afterwards?

I didn't judge, it is just that the whole goth/punk/individualist movement that has grown so popular is inane. People are social creatures, and by nature, cannot be true individuals. Except for true deviants (generally regarded as insane), we all happily follow the rules made by others until we die. C'est la vie.

Who says I can't generalize? Black people have better rythm than white people. (Except me, I'm a white pimpin' machine). Just ask NFS. I'll bet he can "shake dat ass" better than any white boy out there. ;):D

Maybe I should go hide now? I've probably offended just about everyone here. ;):p

Just my two cents.
Call me a freak, punk, goth, or whatever you like. I just happen to like wearing shirts with my favorite bands on them. I guess that's a fashion "no no" to wear a shirt without Abercrombie and Fitch blasted across the front. I also happen to like dying my air red, blonde, blue, etc and wearing spikes, chokers, etc. I do this because I like it. That's it. I really don't care if anyone else likes it or dislikes it. I don't try to fit in with any click or group yet I have alot of freinds. Some people may be a little weirded out at first but once they get to know me, they stop caring what I look like, and that's the way it should be. I know alot of my punk, goth, etc. freinds don't even try to get to know the "trendies", but I do. If they're a jerk, then I don't hang out with them, simply because I don't like their personality. Heck, If I don't like someone who wears trendy clothes simply because of that, wouldn't I be just as bad as the idiots who don't like me simply because I wear "freaky" clothes? Yes I would, and I don't really feel like being a hypocrite.

<< Who says I can't generalize? >>

nobody..generalize all you want. but just keep in mind that you would have your head up your ass. but just don't start whining if the french stereotype all americans as being narrow-minded dumbasses when they base the generalization on just you.

<< I didn't judge, it is just that the whole goth/punk/individualist movement that has grown so popular is inane >>

what an incredibly stupid thing to say. you make it sound like being an individual is horrible...if you like comformity, then move to china. to me, those ppl who act different despite major criticisms are the truly strong ones...and b/c of that, I would give them far more respect than I would ever give you.

<< He didn't even say the WORD gay. Lay off... >>

koni - I didn't mean to imply that he implied all Goth kids are gay - I meant to say just the crazy part. (I just noticed the "My little story of humor..." ;)

Just because I dyed my hair black and do things different from most people that I'm somehow crazy? (It is black btw) I just don't like how people give "goth" kids bad reps because of how they dress or where they shop. (We had some parents try to get our local mall to close down Hot Topic) "Goths" aren't as bad as you people think they are. In my graduating class, the girl ranked 7th in our class was a total goth - people thought she was a drug pusher, a loser, etc. Quit stereotyping us.

It isnt horrible, but to many (myself included), being different is not accepted. I have no doubt that many people who dress in goth are very smart, funny and friendly people. I just cannot accept the fact that they feel some need to create an image around themself that is not accepted as normal.

What is normal? Well, where I live normal is having normal colored hair, not spiking your hair, clean clothes that are not ripped or torn, not wearing 100lbs of chains and not wearing things like choke chains and wierd sh!t like that.

so let me get this right: the goths are to be blamed for "normal" people's intolerance?

<< I just cannot accept the fact that they feel some need to create an image around themself that is not accepted as normal. >>

the reason they dress like that is the whole point to being different - and I'm sure you will admit that they do possess a lot of strong will to be a deviant like that, especially how intolerant society are always looking down upon them b/c they are different.

Sigh...

<< you make it sound like being an individual is horrible >>

I said it is impossible to be an indvidual. The goth/punk/raver thing is all part of the silly 'let's be different together' movement. Dressing in black is merely a fashion statement, and nothing more. If you like to dress goth, by all means, do it. I don't care, it is just your outward appearance. I am just saying that there was probably one individual goth, and people since have merely been clones. It is no different than abercrombie culture or gap kids. People just find a group where they feel comfortable and go there. It really has nothing to do with 'individualism'.

<<Society won't accept anything that's different, be it good or not so good>>

Besides he may be gay but I think that the odds lean toward capitolizing on someones insecurity. Maybe hes secure enough to joke like that with strangers and knew that it would make the other guy uncomfortable. Sounds like a joke to me....
I would never joke like that with someone I didnt know though.

poops last post was dead on. Just because you look like an idiot doesn't mean you are unique if other people look like one with you. What does matter is that an employer is going to laugh at you until you clean your act up; so you're only hurting yourself. I don't need to dress like a vampire and wear lipstick to feel better about myself.

How come most goths are young? Because young people lack wisdom which comes with age. How many 35 year olds do you see dressed as goths? A hell of a lot less than you do teens, because they've come to learn its unnecessary.

When I was in hight school (late 80's early 90's) a goth was a well dressed person, usually (seemingly) intellgent, person who listened to the smiths or the cure.

Man, there were some really hot looking goth chicks back then too. this was well before the watered down alternative movemnet took hold of mainstream music and fashion

<< It really has nothing to do with 'individualism'. >>

and now you claim to know what they are thinking. most of the gothic ppl I know think differently than "normal" ppl at my school...normal as in the majority (and around here, they would be preppy A&F kids). it's not just a fashion statement...they think differently than most kids, and they dress to match their mentality. just ask any goth. and once again, I have to reiterate my point since you are just ignoring it: they do have a strong will because they choose to continuing living a lifestyle that is constantly being under severe attack and criticism by idiots who can't appreciate diversity...and just because of that, they have earned my respect although I would probably never dress like them.

I never claimed to know what anyone was thinking. In fact, I will leave the mind reading up to you:

<< they think differently than most kids >>

And what is with this strong will nonsense? How does dressing a certain way define you as a person? You are not what you own, nor are you what you wear. Dressing in an admittedly odd manner says nothing of willpower. Maybe it is a statement of disgust with the mainstream, but I somehow doubt it.

you obviously have no clue. you're right, you are not what you own...but that wasn't the point I was making. you portray yourself as what you feel and think - that is why most goths/punks dress the way they do. now can you stop being a dumbass and open your eyes without making stupid assertions over something you have no experience in? I, at least, have some gothic friends, therefore I at least have some sense in how they think...it wouldn't surprise me if you told me you've never even talked to one.
