crazy crazy win98se hijinks

this just started recently, about a week ago:
randomly, internet explorer will perform an illegal operation and close. if i open it again, it will freeze again as soon as i click on the address box.
also, background applications will freeze for no reason, even if im not using them (i.e. AOL Instant Messenger)
sometimes, explorer will freeze (perform illegal operation) if i open right-click menu. ill choose close, and the process will repeat every time i do it again.

(personally i think my computer suspects im upgrading, since it started acting up when i ordered upgrades - it will do anything to stop me! but its too late now, fedex is on the way! hahahahahah you foolish computer)

Have you done some of the regular checks? Like maybe a defrag and scandisk... ALso, check for viruses.

bah, i cant be bothered with petty details such as defrag and viruses

nah, i figure this may cause it, but since ill be doing a fresh install of everything in less then a week, ill let it crash and burn. just thought it may be a hardware issue or a win98 issue. thanks anyways
