Cray X1

A brief highlight:

The Cray X1 scales from 16 vector processors (205 Gflops) to 4096 vector processors (52.4 Tflops).
The 800 MHz vector processors are custom designed by Cray and are capable of 12.8 Gflops.
Total System Memory: 32GB to 64TB of RDRAM
Memory Bandwidth: 38.4 GB/s per CPU :Q
 
Terabytes of RAM??? Wow. The hard drive (solid state I bet) capacity should be equally scary.
Can I charge one of those systems to a credit card?😀

I wonder what 64 TB of RDRAM would cost.
 
Could you run like windows 2000 or windows xp on this as any normal computer and play games like unreal 2003,etc with a ATI 9700 pro ? Wonder what kind of 3dmark2001SE score you would get but more importantly what kind of fps would you get in flyby and botmatch in unreal 2003, comm. 4 , quake 3 arena, GTA3, etc? What do you all think?

No. The Cray X1 runs UNICOS. The special supercomputer that Cray is building in cooperation with AMD for the DOE will use some form of Linux, though.
 
Vespasian so could u use then like mandrake 9.0 or redhat 8.0 with a NV30, when it is for sale, sense nvidia has support in linux like with unreal 2003, quake 3 area, and other linux games ? How many fps do you think you would get at like 1600x1200? i know we don't even know the offical specs on the NV30 but how many do you think in your opinion with that fast cpu sense the cpu won't be the bottleneck or the rdram really.


 
also, the instruction set wont be anywhere near x86 I think ... I would think they are risc processors .. correct me if I'm mistaking ...
 
lol, I wonder what kind of things you could do with it. That would be awesome if you woke up and saw a Cray Super Computer in a prettybox next to you. I wonder how many basic (+,-,/,*) calculations it can do per second 😀

(52.4 Tflops).
It normally only takes 3 FLOPs to do a +,- or * calculation (load, calculate, store), so that's about 11.8 Trillian calculations/second.

Its not designed for low-lat gaming to that extent, the latency between the CPU's would make the game unplayable.
I would suppose it could render (even ray-trace?) in software at 1600x1200 faster than nv30. If only the latency weren't a problem... 😛

In "a" pretty box? I think something like the X1 would have one freekin huge box! lol
 
Even if the system ran windows, you wouldn't see much more of a performance boost with current games. You would be held back by the video card bottleneck. Maybe if you had a voodoo 5000000, with a good 6000 or 7000 processors on it. you might get the coveted 30000 fps in quake heh.

BTW, the only supercomputer that is remotely like the X1 is the NEC SX-6 (which Cray sells).

I feel sorry for you Vespasian. You talk about a supercomputer to be used for example this:

If they are the garden variety RDRAM, 256mb,512mb,1024mbsticks, I would sell them piece by piece😀

Thats because you're not doing anything that needs a supercomputer to begin with 🙂 If you need something as powerful as this Cray...you need all that memory 🙂

I could use a machine like this. Just the other day I was writing a program to play connect-4 on a 10x10 board and I had to limit the program to only seeing 4 moves ahead because it took so long. On a 4x4 board playing connect-3, it took an ultra sparc 10 ~1 hr to play its first move!
