Crashing to a Black Screen

I've been having some trouble with my computer as of late. It crashes to a black screen with gray vertical bars (5 or 6 bars) and sometimes I can hear a high pitched sqealing from the speakers. I swaped out my XFX Geforce 5950 Ultra to an old PNY Geforce Ti 4600 I had laying around, thinking it was a video card problem. I have gotten the crash 1 time since the swap and it was after playing Starcraft for 3 hours. It seems to happen when running an application from windows explorer or when using internet explorer. I'm at a loss and I have a new Geforce 6600 GT coming and I hope I didn't act to rash in purchasing a new video card.

My system specs:
AMD Athlon XP 3200+
Gigabyte GA-7VT600 1394
1 GB PC3200 DDR Kingston HyperX
PNY Geforce Ti4600
SoundBlaster Audigy 2

If I left out any usefull hardware info let me know.

Well if you replaced the video card and the issues seem to have gone away (for the most part - one lockup after 3 hours can happen to anyone), then I would venture to guess you made the right decision.
